Sacrifice to having a convertible top is highway noise most of the time. Since these cars are getting older its definitely more noticed.

Anyone try tackling some ways to reduce wind noise while the top is up?

Was that really necessary?Copying images from internet in hopes that people think you are cool does not work.Dont let my post count/join date fool you. This is not some noob question its a legitimate topic that hasnt been covered.

You fail.

Now to anyone that can relate.

Sound deadening like quiet coat or RaaMat? How well would this work on the vert?

Also, ive noticed the weatherstripping towards the back half of the front windows is somewhat flat. Which lets in some air on the highway. Has anyone replaced the weatherstripping and had luck? Links to replacements?

I thought the ear plug pic was funny. But seriously I can't hear crap with the top down and wind blowing. I always just crank the radio higher for a noise solution. I am the same idiot you see singing and head banging that you probably laugh at though while driving.

Chill out dude....no need to get upset...one of the easiest ways not to get any help is to yell at members. With that said...plugs ARE a serious way you can cut down noise...ask my wife, she will use them on long trips in my vert. As for sound deadening, like DynaMat or some other brand...I have found it doesn't help near as much as in a regular hardtop car. It's the cloth top...it's not a good sound deadening material. Now if you have whistling around your windows you can adjust your windows to fit a little tighter and cut down or do away with the noise. Many adjustments can be done.

Seriously, I thought the ear plugs were hilarious. There are studies out now that say men who drive convertibles are more likely to have hearing loss and recommend ear plugs.

That being said here's what I would try. I'm assuming you mean when the top is UP you'd like it to be quieter. Look at the points of entry, i.e. window opening - adjust to fit better. Rubber sections - replacing is tough as the parts are hard to come by but you might be able to source some or fix what you have with soft rubber cement. Perhaps you could augment them to fit better as well.

The top itself is insulated which actually makes our cars cabriolets. You may be able to add some material between the headliner and the cloth top that would help deaden the sound.

Finally, if you want to go crazy you could strip the interior and spray on some kind of insulator as well to the body and then put in upgraded carpet.

Each will add a little bit of sound deadening and weight.

Ear plugs will also work.

Yea, the Nissan sound deadening in black is in a million pieces near the pedals. Ive had the carpet out a few times to im going to try some RaaMat on the floorboard and see if that helps.

I didn't know the windows could be adjusted, ill look into that.

Im over due for a new cloth top. But for now I feel the cloth is flapping in the wind near the window. Im gonna try figure something out at least for the winter.

I also thought the earplugs were pretty funny. mostly cause I used to carry a earplugs in my glove box for people with sensitive ears. my solution for road noise is simple, turn the music up

Yes, i will admit to everyone....the earplugs are kind of funny now that i look at it.I can see where the confusion might have been. I was asking for solutions to the wind noise while the top is up. Fixed the original post.

Im aiming for that balance between power and comfort as a DD, so things like wind noise with the top up bother me.

Honestly.. ear plugs were too funny and for this group - on par (goes with the family atmosphere). A couple of things you may not realize are adding to the road noise. At the current age of our vehicles, almost anything remotely rubber and a bushing or insulator, is probably shot. At this age they have turned into hockey pucks (control arm bushings, sub-frame bushings, transmission mount, motor mounts, tension rod bushings). Another thing to consider are the tires. High performance tires usually add road noise because of the way they are made (lower profile tires magnify this as well). I've changed out a few of the pieces and have noticed a slight reduction in harshness, but I've SR'd mine and am running a flowmaster 20 mounted under the drivers seat. Hope this gives you other things to consider.

Its a early 90s convertible. If you want a quite car then buy a cadillac. I love the sounds.

To help you just a little more...here are a few links that can help with your window adjustments. The first link is 94_240sx's write up on how to fix broken quarter window guides, he shows how much you can adjust your quarter windows: zerothread?id=383252 This link is of the convertible full service manual (FSM) supplement, click on the quarter window and the door window sections...these should help out a lot:http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/24...t.pdf

You can't take anything these idiots at NICO say seriously (myself included) Unless it's about the actual car.

Is your top flopping around a bit. Mine is really tight by the rear window and starting to tear a bit. I am going to have to try to restitch it. If that doesn't work I guess I will be getting a new top sometime in the near future. There are a ton of adjustments that can be made. I also recommend downloading the factory service manual supplement for the verts. It's in a sticky at the top of this forum. In it you will find how to take apart and reinstall the top. A lot of it seems to be taped together. So you may just need to reseal some things. Like it was posted earlier there is material between the headliner and the top. I would check out the manual and see where you can adjust some things to tighten them up. If your top is still original it's old like the rest of the car. You may want to consider looking into replacing the top if it bothers you that much. But if you don't want to spend that kind of money just look around for simple solutions. An adjustment here and there. Maybe slipping some more material in. Retaping etc. Good luck and let us know what you figure out.
