I noticed this morning when I turned on the heat, there was not heat coming in . I noticed though that the temperature gauge was about 3/4 ways up instead of half way up which I normally notice. I was also in traffic and the outside temperature was 40 degress. when I start moving I notice the temp reading drop almost immediately to the normal halfway point. There was no check engine light or anything. I checked the fans and both fans were running. A few weeks ago, there was coolant spatter in the engine compartment. I took it to the dealership and they said that the cap was not on well to the radiator and that they did not notice any leaks. This morning it appeared the cooolant reservoir was basically empty. Is it a coolant leak( it was raining so I could not check) or a broken gauge. Because the check engine light did not come on. Thanks.

Could be the radiator, thermostat or water pump. Also check the oil to see if it's milky looking.

Also could be an air bubble

When the engine is cold open the radiator cap. The radiator should be full with coolent in the expansion tank.
If not add coolent to the radiator.

Start engine with the radiator cap off. If the level in the radiator drops keep adding coolent until the air bubble disappears.

Never open the radiator cap on a hot engine
