This issue may have been covered previously, but I can't seem to find an answer. My 2006 Infiniti G35x seems to be revving higher than normal and the engine noise reflects that. However, I took it to the dealer, who said the rpms were normal. However, they hover around 3100 between 75 & 80 mph. Nothing about it feels normal and its completely different to how it was running a few weeks ago. Does anyone have any insight?

Firstly: Welcome to NICO
I am assuming you have an auto transmission. Did you check and see if overdrive is off. On the G35 if memory serves me well, the button is on the shift lever or right under the gauge cluster. CHeck the cuage cluster, is it show a yellow o/d If it does that means overdrive is off and you will not hit the higher gear. It sounds like your problem.

wtf....there is no O/D button on the G35

also, all G35X have a 5AT - no 6MT was offered with all wheel drive

OP - the G35X has the 3.53 Final Drive - as such with the AUTO trans you should be around 3200 RPMS when holding 80 MPH on a flat grade. This is perfectly normal even though it may seem high. It was designed this way intentionally. It allows the engine to not have to downshift often while cruising since you are in the power band.

In my personal experience I have found that with the 3.53 FD you will achieve the best MPG @ 70-75 mph. I also found that I have better gas mileage at 85 then I do at 80.

Thank you for all of your assistance. The vehicle just seemed different when I drove it and I took particular notice of the rpms. The reason I did this was because the engine seemed to sound completely different, like it had 'propeller' sound. And, instinctively, I associated the sound with the rpms. But now its clear it is something else. The car sounds like a single engine propeller as I get around 40 mph and continues to whine at higher speeds. The dealer ran it on the computer and found no issues, but the car is different. Any ideas?

how is it different? have you taken one of the techicians on a drive with you so you can show them what you are defining as different?

I wasn't able to go along with the technician as I had to drop off the vehicle. However, the noise is distinct. Normally, it had a nice, throaty sound to it. Now, it sounds, for lack of a better description, like a consistent 'sputtering'. It still runs fine, but the cabin noise has definitely increased. It sounds localized near the front right side of the vehicle. Could it have anything to do with the front wheel bearing?

wheel bearings generally are described as a "whirring" sound I believe
