I was wondering why CA18det's cannot rev to 9000RPM like the honda s2000 motor. I think boost_boy said that there is valve float at 8700RPM but couldn't you just get better springs.

This has been troubling me for some time, why the CA can't rev that high and if it is really ridiculous to rev that high why did Honda do it. Thanks in advance for the info.

you can with better springs and probably solid lifters... but why? do you have a super huge turbo that needs to rev high? I don't get why everyone wants to rev to 10k

Paul and Ray both had motors that *could* rev that high, but they also had huge turbos that didn't get rollin till 4k, so it made sense. For the average joe with a CA18DET, its just not neccesary!

Because the S2000 was built that way from the start. The CA and technically any motor can be modified to rev to 8500+ But like Sean said, whats the point unless your running a big turbo or a peaky power band, like the S2000. I prefer to get my power from low to mid range. I hate reving the piss out of a motor to get somewhere.

ive pegged mine at 9k bone stock! i reccomend that you never do that though..ever. Halts maul, huren! Scheisse lamer <-- sorry, friend did that (im at school). anyway, with the right stuff itll rev pretty damn high. and i dont know, you may be like me in thinking that it doesnt need to rev high to make power, but more as a safety blanket.

If you make the motor capable of 9000ish rpms would that nessarily mean you would have to rev the nuts off it to get some where? Also haveing never driven a ca18det car, what does it feel like at the high end of the stock range? Still pulling strong or begging for a shift?

with the STOCK turbo, it's down to 5psi (7 is normal) at about 7500. With a different turbo that can actually breath up there, but the stocker makes you want to shift.

Revving the CA18DET to past 7500 rom is senseless, unless you want to just rev it to see if it can go that high. When you put hot cams and valve springs, then you want to go the dyno to see where your power is being made and then starts dropping off. My built motor will be seeing as much 9200rpm and it's because with the turbo, solid lifters, cam profile, springs, and adjustable cam gears, I will have a better chance of seeing 600+whp and it will get there whether it wants to or not. But for you guys with your stock nissan crapola set-ups, keep your rpms below 8000rpm because you're only hurting your rod bearings and wasting valuable time with the excessive rpm swing. All in all, the CA18DET can rev to nearly 9000rpm, but if you don't have a big/monster turbo, what's the point!
