High RPM, low MPH

Hey guys I need some help here! i have a 89 240sx and its giving me trouble with acceleration. I start my engine and warm up my car as it is cold here. but when i put it into drive the RPM is higher than the MPH for acceleration. it is around 3, 3.5 - 4 RPM at 25-30mph!! what could be causing this????thanks for any information and help!

Auto I assume? First place to check is the TPS. Make sure it is outputting the right voltage as you depress the gas pedal.

yes it is an automatic transmission. How to i go about checking the TPS? im not very mechanically inclined.
