Hey everyone, I have an rb20 in my s13 and im wondering if any of you have really high pressure in the upper radiator hose. I feel like when my car is running the upper hose feels like its going to burst. I was told that it might be because of the short length of the hose but was just wondering. Im currently just using a regular hose, do you think upgrading to a silicone hose would be less prone to bursting? Thanks

you can run the silicone pair of hoses, pressure should be 12 or 14.7 psi under the hose, of corse itll be hard (thats what she said)

You will have to cut it apart. I used some from a s13 and just cut them apart.

Some pressure is normal, but if its to the point where the hose feels like it could pop or you cant even squeeze it, there might be a problem. I've encountered a few cars that had tiny headgaskets leaks. It would leak compression into the water passage under boost. Also since it would only happen under boost, compression and leakdown showed no signs of leakage. I only figured out the problem by just going ahead and changing the headgasket.

Yea it feels like alot of pressure. It doesnt feel normal to me and I work on cars everyday. Only thing is I replaced the headgasket before I dropped the motor in. People at my work tell me that its because the hose is so short. Im usisng a cxracing radiator with a 1.1 bar cap which is more than the normal ka24de cap which I believe is .9 bar. Could that make a difference?

Length of hose has absolutely NOTHING to do with pressure. Your coworkers are probably just used to working on domestics with 2+ ft of hose length on both the upper and lower rad hoses.

If the pressure was getting higher than you thought was normal, look at the radiator cap first. If it is sticking closed and holding pressure higher than the spring is rated for (i.e. it isn't opening and bleeding off to the reservoir), replace it. If that doesn't work, do a leak down test to check the head gasket. If that's not it, you're paranoid LOL

are you talking about pressure when the coolant is hot, or pressure when the car is just running (cold start)? if it's the latter, you might have a head gasket problem. when it is hot, you will see about 10-14 psi of pressure before the radiator cap blows. higher if you have some aftermarket cap.

the purpose of the radiator cap is to raise the boiling point of your coolant, not to handle some pressurized coolant for no reason.
