Whenever i start my car, it makes an annoying high-pitched whining noise, and it does it until i turn it off. The noise persists, and sometimes gets louder when i accelerate. I just had the belts replaced maybe a year ago.. If thats the problem, how often should i change the belts?

You might have oil or power steering fluid dripping onto the belts. The belts themselves can still be good but squeal if oily.If oil on the belts is indeed the cause, it's probably an indicator of another bigger problem that needs to be addressed, like a leaking PS system or engine seal.

A bad power steering pump or A/C compressor might also cause the noise. Since it's winter, I doubt it's the A/C compressor; but it's still possible if the clutch has gone bad or if you run your defrost constantly, since defrost enables A/C to dry the air.

Man im having the exact problem with my 96 I30 .. How many miles do you have? Mine sounds like the PS pump but i cant figure out whether i have the electronic suspension or not as this affects which PS pump to buy. Anyone know how to find this out?
