This is just a theory I have, but...
Whereas American cars were designed with part failure/replacement in mind (FORD in particular), in Japan, cars were engineered to be virtually maintenance free for the lifespan of the car. In Japan car owners usually don't own a car past 40-80K miles, and maintanence is usually performed by an auto shop. For a trained mechanic with a shop and the proper tools this isn't really so bad. Owning a car is considered a luxury in Japan, so ease of maintenance for the DIY'er wasn't really a consideration.
