So...I have a 2008 Rogue S with about 70K miles on it. Within the past few months I have noticed on long trips (200 miles +) that towards the end of the trip I am getting a high pitch noise when giving the car gas. The more I push on the gas the higher and louder the noise becomes. If I let my foot off the gas totally the noise will almost disappear and then start up again when I begin to accelerate again. This only happens after the car has been driven for a span of a couple hours or more and I normally am going between 70 and 80mph. Can't figure this one out. Belts, transmission, Air Filter/Flow issue??? Any one else having a similar issue?

first thing i thought was air filter/flow issue. do you have any kinf of intake or CAI on there? no leaves inthe air filter box are there?

i just dont see how it would start after a long trip and not any other time.

This isn't the wind noise issue covered in an existing thread is it? The symptoms sound familiar. It may not be caused by driving a certain number of miles (that could just be coincidental). IIRC there's a video clip with the noise in one of the threads.

Since the noise follows rpms i.e. increases in volume as you increase throttle pressure, I would rule out wind noise. Vacuum leak is definately something to check but if this is a very loud whining noise I don't know if you could attribute it to vacuum leak, but it's possible.

I hate to say it but I have heard of the CVT transmission making similar noises indicating a problem, but it's really hard to say what the source of your noise is. It is strange that you only encounter the noise after long trips. Since the noise only shows up so intermittently taking it to the dealer for diagnosis could be unproductive, but if you suspect it could be the CVT it couldn't hurt to let them check it out - check for codes, examine the fluid etc., and perhaps they'll have other ideas....good luck, let us know what you find out.

My 2008 Rogue typically makes a higher pitched whirring sound on deceleration/acceleration in the 50-90km/h range. It's not very loud or obtrusive. It's been like this for the past 2 years. The CVT checks out fine however and I have never had an issue.

Keep in mind the CVT operates and makes different noises than a conventional transmission. It may be unsettling or unnatural to some.

BTW, have you changed the accessory drive belt recently? At 70k, it's overdue and could be the cause of your noise as it appears to be rpm related.

You can inspect it yourself. Things to look for:

- Cracks, frays, cuts. Be sure to check the underside too.
- Overly glossy surface on the smooth side of the belt.

i wonder if it is something that is related to temperature. after a long trip fluids would be hot, etc.
