I recently bought a 1994 Q45, and really enjoy the car's handling and breaking. It also corners well for what it weighs, I have not been so impressed with it's launch. I did read that the '94 has a diffrent gear ratio, for smoother shifting, but that translates to slow. I am interested in tryed and tested performance modifications. I know about better air filters and high qaulity synthetic oils, but what else can be done for performance. All I can think of is getting high qaulity tires and a nitrous systm, if they make one for the Infiniti. Maybe put a '93 transmission in a '94 for the better gear ratio?

I would start by looking at what Wes has done with his 94... you can get a list at the bottom of his current sig.

You may be able to do a search for mods that Wes has done.

There has been plenty of discussion about changing gear ratios lately... probably can track down some good info with the search button.

If you have trouble finding stuff through the search, post again. Sometimes I need help finding the right keywords to get the topics I am looking for. Usually someone will remember a good search string to point you in the right direction.

I will look for Wes, and see what he has done with his car, thanks. I'm looking for particular things that will improve the launch. I'm not concerned right now, with the handeling and breaking. Maybe some better tires though.

If you are serious about laying down rubber then you got to lay down several Ben Franklins. There is nothing cheap about the Q whether regular maintenance or a modification. If you got about 10 Ben Franklins...then the cheapest and quickest way to go is the Nitrous System similar to JWT's setup. Do a search (4.08, carbon fiber driveshaft, ECU, Torque Converter, 90-93 Transmission, Exhaust, Headers, supercharger, etc...the list goes on and on and have all been covered in the past year or so)...spend several hours reading. Countless posts on speed related mods.

Yep. short of a 4.08 differential ratio, there is not much you can do for launch. But then again, there are few cars that can match its 55-90 acceleration in second gear with the stock 3.53 ratio.

With out more gears, cruising and fuel economy is compromised.

Your choice.

You mentioned trans heads heddars torque converter and nitrous great. You sayed some thing about money, you may want to consider that I have put more than twenty grand into a single car (1965 Impala), from a new engine, rims, paint body work, and many high performance modifications. I have built up five or more cars from tune ups to complete rebuilds. But I have mostly upgraded on older cars were improvments could be done by high lift cams, high rise intakes, electric ignitions, roller rocker arms, stroker kits, I could go on for pages. My point is these are computerized engines, and it seems that the computer is the first thing to up grade then the transmission. Thank you for the ideas.

Remember the Q is already a high performance engine with 32 valves so less can be done . 274 cubic inches is small for a 4300 pounds car with just a driver and fuel.

In theory one could acheive 80 lb.ft per liter, but practical limits are closer to 75 or 330-340 lb/ft.

From a launch and zero to 30 mph the overall gearing is luxury not performance. Total multiplication is ~~9.5 vs more modern transmissions which run 12-13 in 1st gear.

While gaining 10% from the engine is possible you still would be 25% short of gearing compared to a new M45 and heavier on weight.

Why Nissan made the 5.6 liter engine.

First thing first... Get the car to max performance stock... new KS, clean plenum, blah blah blah..... THEN you can start thinking about other things like ECU upgrades, custom headers, NITROUS, 4.08 gears, etc...
