Looking for opinions on doing a few drain and refills on my newly acquired 05 g35 auto. It's got 135k miles on it and the transmission fluid has never been changed. It's pretty dark. More brown than red actually.

It would be better to have an ATF flush but given the mileage of your car and with no history of previous flush, most shops will refuse it due to liability issue.

The car needs Nissan Matic-D ATF which has been replaced by Matic-S. Capacity is 10-7/8 quarts. I suggest doing a pan drop, clean the pan and magnets and if required, replace the filter. You need a new gasket for such job. The mounting bolts supposedly are one-time use but other members like me have re-used them without any problem.

Make sure the engine is warm and ATF level is correct before starting the drain and refrill. If you are dropping the pan, you probably will drain @ 5 quarts. The important thing is to measure how much you have drained and replace with the same amount. A regular drain will take out @ 4 quarts. I usually run the engine for 100 seconds, shutdown and immediately drain. Add an equal amount of fluid drain. I do this 3 times so you need 13 or more quarts for multiple drain and refill.

I usually buy my parts from IoS (Infiniti of Scottsdale) but you can also get good deals from others like Courtesy Nissan. You can try eBay but make sure you buy from a trusted seller. The price could be from $8-12/quart.

I have a Bi-Annual Schedule whre all the fluids are replaced and they are due next month. I already bought 25 quarts of Matic-S for the 02Q and 06M. I bought filters, fluids, belts, plugs, etc from various sources to cut down cost.

Yet my '11 G37 does not recommend any trans fluid changes whatsoever. What has changed in transmissions and fluids that changes are no longer recommended?

My concern is that I've read of instances where old fluid has been replaced and the transmission started to slip shortly after. The reasoning behind this is that the old fluid suspends micro particles of wear material and provides friction to the worn plates. Replacing with new particle free fluid eliminates the friction material thus causing the slipping.
The FSM calls for Matic-J?

I used Valvoline max life ATF. They (valvoline) specifically state it is a replacement for matic -j, -s, and d. I did two drain and fills a week apart. I did the front and rear diffs (80w90), and the transfer case also. '07 35x w/ ~127k. It's been a couple thousand miles now and no problems. The drain plug on the transmission used the same crush washer as the oil drain.

What condition was the original fluid in? Still nice and red or brown like mine?
