Ok I am looking at some vh45de's. There is one in a yard its a 93 with 193,000 miles. Yikes? right. But the lady at the yard said its mine for $500 and I can take whatever I need with the motor, which would probably save me 1000 headaches in the future (I'm swapping it into an S13). I could take it and have it rebuilt for about the same cost as a motor with say 110,000 miles on it would cost from another junkyard. I really can't find any with lower miles than that. WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

I would buy the $500 one and rebuild it.

The other motor will probably need a rebuild as well.

thats what I was thinking. I'd like to go FI on it but damn there is no support out there... lower compression pistons are like 2 g's...

Completely custom made pistons are half that.

or get VQ30DET pistons, they will apparently go into the VH...

Anyway, for a rebuild, as long as its not thrown a rod or the guides havent failed, you should just have to replace the bearings and new rings and it should be good as new!

yeah I have rebuilt motors before but right now I dont have anywhere to do it so I'll probably be dropping it off at the performance engine rebuilds down the street after I strip it down to the shortblock.

more info on those vq30det pistons... compression ratios, rod modifications???

bueller?lol

how about camshafts? I see some places doing custom regrinds but I dont know enough about the motor or camshaft specs to be able to tell them what to make me. Anyone tried these? prices, links, specs? I dont really want to have to go super crazy and replace a lot of parts, I'm looking at having the motor rebuilt with possibly vq30det pistons, some hotter cams, and if I can find some, some stiffer valve springs.

You will be limited on lift due to the curtain area of the valve sizes.. I plugged some numbers in, and anything over .400-ish won't have anymore gain in airflow.

TMS speaks English. I havent seen him on NICO lately, but I'd love to hear his source/experience with the VQ pistons. Have you tried emailing/IM'ing him Wes?

I may have to get in touch with tms since I can't find a source on those pistons to try it myself.
