High Idle then wont start

Just recently my car seems to idle really high (~1500) every time I come to a stop and if I tap the gas it will sputter and then die on me. Once it dies it is really hard to get it to crank again. I pulled the plugs out today and they were soaked in gasoline. The strange thing is that the check engine light isn't on at all. I did however buy the car with a S14 KA in it (its a 91). I was thinking it might be the MAF, but for that car a MAF will run me 300. If Im taking a shot in the dark I would like to fix something that is a little cheaper. Any suggestions as to what my problem is would be great, or maybe a link to somewhere that can tell me how to read the codes with a 91 DE ECU. Thanks.
