High idle revs to 5000 and back. Can I make it to the shop?

I have a 1990 300zx NA. After starting the engine, the idle is at a low rumble that then revs all the way up to around 5000 rpm and then back down. It continues to do this and there is also white smoke involved. I have done a fair amount of research using this gracious site and have several ideas as to what the problem/s is/are. All that being said, i am nothing close to a mechanic and am running short on time (have to move by the end of the month). I really don't want to have to spend the money on a towtruck to the shop but also don't want to do further damage. So, am i good to drive it a couple of miles at most or should I bite the bullet and call the towtruck?
Many thanks

Pull ECU codes. Check TPS and MAF. Clean IACV connectors. See if you can borrow someone's ECU to swap into yours temporarily. Look for massive vacuum system leaks.
