I just bought a used set of rims I really like from the BST forum that I want to equipe with something I can competitively autocross in that isnt terribly expensive (like $150 a tire maybe?).

They are Blitz 16x7 front and 16x8 rear (I know staggered isnt best for neutral handling, but these are just a bangin set of rims and they were well priced for what they are). So im thinking along the lines of 225/45-16 front and 245/45(40?)-16 rear.

I will be driving in the rain, so I dont know how much it matters if the tire is rated for wet use or not.

Open to suggestions from any reputable or self proclaimed tire guru

You have the best wheel size possible

You don't need the absolute most massive tire that will fit onto the rim. You need sticky rubber.

The Azenis RT-615 should be bad-*** when it comes out full fledged...

the A032R is an awesome tire, period, but will land you in a R-compound class IIRC...and if your going to run an auyocross tire, use the "s" compound, not the "H" because it wont require as much heat to get sticky.

S03's also do really, really well, but are costly..luckily since youre running a common 16" tire split setup...theres lots to choose from.

I would go with some BFg G-Force KD's (still the king of dry...!) or the Azenis.....I'll let you and your wallet decide :p

Thanks alot for the suggestions, I have time since I have a new set of kuhmo all seasons on my r32 gts rims, I'll wait to see if the RT-615's come out in the recommended sizes.

Either of you have experience driving R-compound dry tires in the rain?

Here are the rims I got:

Those wheels are nice!

I've done a few thousand miles on size 225/50-15 RA-1 which are treadwear 40, "recommended for competition use only"

I drove insome rain, some cold(which is just as bad) and some dry.

A competition tire is dangerous when the tire is cold, and doubly as scary when conditions are cold/wet, or both. Paying very close attention, I found the RA1 to keep a high level of grip in the rain, after the tire was warmed up.

A buddy has a VW GTI shod with Azenis Sports. Testing the limits of adhesion is just as frightening in wet as with the RA1. Warmed up, the tire does very well. Cold and wet, just as bad as RA1.

Still, these tires are not optimized for wet use.

Most of these Track ready/auto-x type of tires have similar void ratios to allow for water evacuation. Falken is boasting the new design of the RT-615 and saying wet performance is greatly increased.

(The Falken brand has changed hands, from Ohtsu, who gave us the great Azenis Sport. Falken now falls under the Sumitomo banner, and Sears owns the advertising rights to the brand name Falken)Long story short, we need to drive on the RT-615 to see if it's up to snuff, because it has abolutely nothing in common with the Azenis Sport.

I run Avon 225/50 on my 16x7 wheels. They have been a very good set of tires so far, and I have not had a problem with them. The thing that sold me on these tires was that they were given good dry reviews as well as good wet reviews.

I can say that they are definitely a grippy tire, and offer almost as much grip in the rain as they do on dry tarmac.

Avon used to make competition tires a long time ago, and it seems that they're trying to capitalize on the new performance market with their new Tech brand.

I would check out tirerack and go through some of the tires we recommend and see what kind of reviews they get.

the bad part about those new RT-615's is the price jump though, maybe they'll be worth it?

Kumho V710

Grippy, fast warm-up, and cheap.

RA-1's aren't too great for auto-x IMO.
