well its official, my new stillen exhaust is on the way, which leaves me with only one problem...what to do about the strikingly bare front end of those brand new pipes. I was looking at a set of Kinetix high flow cats to slap on there and complete the whole system, but i have yet to order those, (my mind needs time to catch up with the bills that my fingers just clicked away). so anyway, i need some opinions from the pros...do i

A. Throw on the exhaust first chance i get, and toss the cats on laterB. Wait to put the exhaust on until i have the cats, so i get it done in one shotorC. Say to the cats because they are not worth it and my dealer is going to void my warantee and that would be BAD.

thanks again for the input...and the modding bug

Do it all in one shot... unless you really really like being under the car.

I would do high flow cats unless you are planning to run nitrous.. then do no cats.

Hello Jeff:

Just like you, I just ordered a few mod parts as well. I learnt a great deal from this forum, and I agree, the cost of moding a car can be painful after so many clicks on the web.

Well, I didn't worry so much about my cats and headers. Rather I decided to do JWT Pop Charger with z-tube, 5/16" Plenum spacer, Mrev2, and Stillen Cat-back exhaust. I will be installing all of it at one time. My next plan would be to install a non-underdrive Unorthodox pulley set with may be a high flow cat, and perhaps drop the height of the car with an eiback coil set. I have been assured that i would love the car, more. I shall wait and see. Good luck with yiur mods. Installing everything at one time is a very good idea. Most people don't install it all at once because of costs. So, if you have the money, why not do it all at once, and enjoy the full benefits?

how are the smogging laws and how soon is it until your next smog? I live in CA so it sucks out here. Unless you are going to do the cats yourself you will be spending money everytime you have to smog to get them taken off and then to have them reinstalled.

if they are high flow cats, they will pass smog...test pipes will not. no need to remove them when you smog...i hate mis information.

Make sure that the high flow cats you get ARE CARB (California Air Resource Board) approved, and therefore will pass smog. If you live in CA, make sure everything you do to your car has a CARB number, and save it, because the Smog mech doing your inspection may need to see the list and the CARB approval number before passing your car. The alternative is that you will get bounced to a referee station, and that could be a real PITA for you and your car.

(this post assumes you live or are moving to California - if you don't YMMV)

thanks for adding that info rn79870...that's exactly what I was talking about...I just don't know if other states are as strict as CA...and the last time I checked the CA law stated that the cats could not be replaced at all unless the original cats were found to be faulty...so I don't feel that any "mis information" has been put out

Thanks for all the info. I live in NJ so unless someone has any information on this state, i don't believe i need to get CARB numbers for inspection. And no i was not going to put on test pipes...just high flow cats, and from what i've read, the cats have passed emmisions testing, but they do not have a CARB number with them, but again since i dont live in CA i dont think that should be a problem.

no, you should be fine

CA is just really stringent

it is always good to go with CARB certified parts though just in case laws change...

My idiot father took my first car into the shop for inspection...

I had 2000 worth of exhaust / header / straight pipes / mods on the car... WHICH FAILED emmissions... of course, and, had to be replaced with OEM bafflers and cats and silencers

not to mention the cost of new exhaust (500)... Make sure you have a buddy inspecting or swap the pipes yourself.... This is definately a ****ty way to lose HP... and invested $, time, and sanity...

Take my advise, it's best to go high flow cat route...

That's what I plan for my G35.

Ouch, ^ that was an expensive lesson. I'll bet the EPA, or whatever the equivalent Canadian agency has approvals/permission references for these aftermarket parts too. It might be worth a little investigating before buying stuff for your Gs.

The Stillen high flow cats are expensive, but that's OK cause they are CARB legal, and claim to be fine on emmissions testing...while improving hp nearly as much as a test pipe!

Sounds good to me!

560 USD!

Are they available in canada? around 400 US??

I was unaware the stillens would mess your ecu.?

Either way... An emmisions passing car is the way to go... THINK OF THE ENVIRONMENT!!!

I spend like 600 bucks a month on gas.. which is OK, but I feel bad for global warming.
