wrong.

valve reliefs are needed to keep the vavles from making contact with the pistons during normal operation. they won't protect your engine if your timing belt or chain fails.

also, it doesn't matter if it has a belt or chain, if it is an interference engine (which applies to about 90% of the engines built in the last 2 decades) you are looking at disaster when the timing chain or belt breaks.

there are no DOHC intereference motors from mazda.... and would you mind telling me when the valves are open while the piston is close to tdc?

Well when i get my engine back together in a week or two ill tell you guys if 89 KAE pistons are too tall for KADE :)

go to your local parts/machine shop-mine had a book for pistons they could order and it listed all the specs for easy comparison(piston dia-pin size-comp height-ring size-weight-dish size)in my case i ended up putting ka-24e pistons in my z-24 for more compression-z had.060 dish=ka had.020dishdidnt check on 16valve pistons but might be some interchange there too
