Hey guys, I'm posting this for a friend. He has a high comp (11.1:1) bore'd over KA24DE. Right now the engine takes a long time to start, has loud pops from the intake manifold and sometimes doesn't want to run. He has to give it light then hard throttle to get it to run right. We tried many things, cam timing, drain fuel tank, test charging system, knock sensor, MAF, etc. We recently tested the fuel pressure, it would jump in between 30psi to 45psi and at time up to 60psi. I suggested a Walboro and adjustable FPR. Anyone else have this problem or any suggestions? Thanks

sounds to me like bad cam timing, or distributor, cause of the intake backfiring.

Cam timing is on, ignition timing may need attention...

I'd begin by testing vacuum @ idle. Should be around 20in/hg.

Once you verify that it's stable, replace that FPR, and sure, why not toss in a Walbro? They're cheap and you know for sure it's not gonna leave you wanting for fuel.

If the vacuum is NOT solid, look for leaks. That fuel pressure shouldn't be jumping like that, and if it is, sounds like either a nasty leak, or the IACV is freakin' out on ya'.
