Relay harness' main function in my eyes is to protect your car's OEM harness from getting fried if anything malfunctions as it has it's own fuse. The secondary function is to get voltage directly from the battery so you won't have misfires of your HIDs(eg. both headlights don't turn on at the same time) when you use the AUTO feature. However, my harness did not correct that issue for me.
When I had my first HID set, I had it connected directly to the OEM harness, no relay involved. Some water got into the ballast, it fried... and the OEM harness would not work anymore. It didn't work even when I put the halogens back in. I had to take it to the dealer and fake like I never had HIDs in there.
