My hid come with a relay harness (morimoto 3five h11). Basically, the harness takes ONE fog light feed from the car to trigger the relay to draw power directly from the battery in order to power both ballasts. My question is, why isn't this simply set up where the ballasts are fed by each fog light feed from the car and keep things simple and compact? I called retrofitsource and the guy I got said its to protect the car and hid. My problem with that answer is there is no extra protection. The relays themselves don't provide protection, and the inline fuse is nothing extra because I'm sure the lines to the factory fogs have fuses. So why? My boy wanted to just connect the ballasts direct like I think it should, but I put in the relay harness simply because I don't know and can't figure a company would set something up this cumbersome, useless, and time consuming without reason. So someone please enlighten me.

the relay supplies enough power to light the hids. Without the Relay providing direct power, sometimes only 1 bulb will fire up unless you turn it on and off a few times. Hopefully that gives you a good explanation

Ok, so your saying the factory harness isn't providing 12v to the fog? If so I guess I can understand that. I'll test it when I get a chance.

To add to what azn said, it provides 12v but not enough in a burst mode to fire the ballast. The ballast needs extra power for that initial startup 'kick'. The whole point of the harness is just more 'heavy duty'.

I was the same way initially...didn't get a harness because I figured I'd just plug each HID kit in to each light input. Needless to say, I am now running a harness on both my car and my sport bike. It's just better for the HID kit.

It's really hit or miss. When I had my HID fogs, sometimes 1 would not fire up so I had to turn it off and on a few times.
