I recently got a '97 J30 and am loving it. I have been able to fix a lot of little issues with the vehicle by reading stuff from this site. This site rocks by the way!

So I am wanting to convert my headlights to HID. I have found a conversion kit on eBay that I am considering getting. I am just wondering what you all think about it and if I should get another conversion kit somewhere else.

Here is what I am looking at:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...sting

Also, when you do a conversion like this, is it normal to just do the lo-beam conversion or should you do all the lights? The eBay kit says that it has 2 bulbs, ballasts, etc... so I assume that this will only do the lo-beams and not the hi's.

Am I understanding this right? Is this a good kit? Should I be looking at something else and if so, what?

Thanks in advance!

Hi DD! I see you are in Toronto.... I just moved back to Austin from Burlington, Ontario, so I was right there by you for about 5 years.

Thanks for the welcome!

Or how about these? I could get the lo and hi beams for about $150 shipped. These do not state that they are for a J30, but I am guessing they would still work as longs as the bulb is 9006 & 9005.

Anyone?

Hello! Glad to hear your decision to install an HID kit on the J!

Things to keep in mind:

eBay kits are risky! Be careful on the quality of the item.- Japanese HID kits for Japanese Cars -Don't touch the bulb.Find 2 spaces to mount both of the ballasts.OEM is the best but could get expensive and you might need to customize some stuff.Go with 4300k or 6000k HID NOT 8000k or + because you do not have a ricer car!

Other than that HID will make the car look years and years newer!

Here is a little preview:

Let's see some pictures when you order and install the HID in your J30!

Peace.

Yes I do have my HID's in my low beam, here is why:

To begin, you can't choose if you want to put your HID's in the high beam or low beam because when you order them you will choose between 9005, 9006, H3 ECT, which represents the plug pattern which will fit inside the housing. The high beams on the J30 are 9005 and the low beams are 9006.

Which means that when you are ordering the HID's you can only choose one of those two. The one you pick will be on the plug and play kit that will be coming in the mail.

The reason you can't get the high beam plug TYPE which is 9005, is because the high beams are directly aimed very very high and yes although they are indeed clear they become bright and blinding. They are extremely blinding with halogens in them so imagine the type of -damage- would be to the oncoming driver!

Plus your will still have your high beams working any time you want them too. Nothing will change there.

Really one choice to sum it up. Trust me once you get them they will satisfy your standards no matter how high.

OEM HID's are original HID systems that come stock on high priced Mercedes, BMW's, Infiniti's ECT. People rip out that factory HID systems usually made by the brands OSRAM and Philips and install them in there own vehicle by customizing every thing to fit.

Hope this helps!

Hey man. I bought HIDs from ebay seller Smart4Cars. They had a hard time starting in cold weather, so I would have to just keep flicking them on and off until they stayed on (took up to 10 minutes sometimes). Now, I haven't heard of this happening to anyone else, even from the same seller. They are warrentied, so I'm not too concerned about it, but I'm just throwing it out there.

Yes, just get the low beams. Oh, by the way, cars that have HIDs from the factory have 4300k temp. Most sites explain it, but something like 3000k puts out the most lumens (most light on the road), but those are bright yellow. As the temp goes up, the light gets white around that 4300k mark, and gets more blue, then around 10,000k it gets purple, and if you keep going up, I think it eventually turns green. The higher you go above that 3000k mark, the less lumens there are hitting the road, so 4300k-6000k is a great balance for look and light.

Hope that helps you out.

I tried to find an eBay seller with the ID of Smart4Cars, but it does not exist. They may not be around anymore....

Can anyone recommend a kit on eBay that is "safe"?

Most of the ones I have found on the net have an input voltage between 9 and 14. Isn't the voltage on the stock wiring at 5 volts? Should we not put anything that is going to draw more than 5 volts as a kit? Am I understanding this right?

I really want to get a kit and don't want to spend $400 for it. I don't want to burn up my wiring either though.

Can anyone suggest an ebay kit that is safe?

Thanks!

Hey dude, here's the link. http://stores.ebay.com/Smart4CarsNow...the place said they're going to send me replacement ballasts, since they aren't working in cold weather, but if you don't trust them because of that, there are plenty out there. For what it's worth, a bunch of guys on a 300zx forum use the kit from this place, and they don't have problems.

And I don't think anything happened to my wiring, since halogen headlights work fine. I'm pretty sure it was just those ballasts, but only because I can't think of anything else it would be.

Cool! Thanks for the link....

How long have you had this kit in your J30?

I've only had it maybe two months. They are sending me replacement ballasts since the first set wouldn't start. They were so nice to have, too. My night vision isn't all that great.

Wow! I have never heard of HID kits for that price!

Like I said, be careful because HID can get up past $600 bucks for just a kit!!!And that crazy seller is practically giving them away which really puts a ? mark in my mind in there quality.

Anyway, hope it works out!

Well, I started this thread about 5 months ago and finally installed the HID lights in my J. I got the kit from Smart4Cars and I am very impressed. The kit seems extremely well made. It took me about an hour to install, but most of that was trying to find a place to mount the ballasts. I am not totally sure they are going to stay where they are now. I may try to find another place, but they are fine where they are. They work, but it has not gotten dark here yet (Austin, Texas) so I don't know the comparable difference just yet.

I am so glad I finally broke down and made the switch!

If anyone is questioning doing this, I say go for it. You can spend the money and get more expensive kits, but I would suggest the Smart4Cars kit. It appears to be extremely well made and they offer a 1 year warranty.

Anyway, I did it finally and am glad I did. I went with the 6000K too...

Well I just went out for a test drive and all I can say is...

WOW! I should have done this a long time ago.

The only thing I need to do is find a white light for the side lights. They are still yellow-ish and it doesn't look right. Anybody have an idea as what to get?

I went with more orange side bulbs when I switched to HID's and it looks pretty natural.
