Hello,

I bought (for a few money) a 1980 Datsun 720, that I am prepared tu repair/rebuilt.

I come here because these vehicules are rare in France, so there's no chat about them and I may need some technical advices.

I'm sorry if my english is poor, but writing here would be a good path to improve it. Tell me when I make mistakes ^^.

Hey, welcome to NICO! We have a Datsun Truck forum that you can ask technical questions in, and many knowledgeable people in there to answer said questions!

And your English isn't too terrible, honestly. At least you use proper punctuation, which is more than I can say for a majority of those who speak English as their first language! :chuckle:

Again, welcome to NICO! Glad to have you here!

Yes it is, I don't really know why (i'm ironic: it's because of taxes but here most of the vehicles works with diesel, and quite all the utility vehicles (I means vehicles to works with)).

I live near the Swiss border, in a mid-mountain country.

The Datsun is still in my father house (with 2 of my other cars, the manta and the rekord).
As I live in a flat here, without garage, it'll have to wait a little before I word on it, but I begin to collect informations.

I'll try to find some picts anyway.

I spent a few days in Epinal a couple of years ago. Are you anywhere near there?

Yes, more or less.

I live about 250km southern from Epinal, ans most of my family lives in a circle of about 150 km around it.
Epinal is in a beautiful country, I went there last year for a friend's wedding...

Thanks for your warm welcome.

Here are some picts:

First: the pick-up:

As you see, i'll have some body work to do on it, but the frame isn't rusted, and the motor runs good, these are the reason I took it.
I'll rebiult the body not to be able to expose this car, but to use it as it was made for, carrying. This will stay a working machine.

2: The Opel rekord, this was to become my girlfriend first old car, I am to be given an other one to take body parts on it, maybe i'll keep the other and rebuilt this one's motor on the other, as the other seems to be in better shape.
This one has a 2.1 liter diesel motor.

3: My first old car, an 1972 opel manta with a 1.2 liter motor, works well, but has yet a 1.0 liter motor, as i broke up the original 1.2 and had the 1.0 ready to be build in (I was to move at the same time, I made at the quickliest). This car runs well.

I recently bought parts to give it a new motor (I bought 5 motors, sold 2, and 6 geraboxes, plus some others pieces), but i wait a little to give it some horses more.

In France, we don't run swapped cars (rebuilt with bigger motors than the car was sold with) because of our f****ng stupid laws.

4: My girlfriend everydays car. This Opel ascona was given us from a friend, who didn't had enough space to keep it and could'n find someone to buy it.

It works well with it's little 1.2 liter motor (the same as the manta).

Presnetation is made...I have others picts, but there are detailled picts.

Aww I'm glad I live somewhere swaps are really common.

My mom's first car was an Opel GT. She said everyone made fun of it. I saw one a few years ago driving around.

Nice group of opels.

I thought the swap laws in France were based on manufacture year of the car, not the displacement...

There is not swap laws here.
Here, you just can put the same engine as you had. It's even forbidden the modify brakes (even for more efficient than the original ones), it's also forbidden to change the wheels diameter or size (but the cops don't care, and so do the technical check each 2 years).

Anyway, there is also something with manufacture year, but it must be something like cars before 1930/40 or something like that, that we can treat like hot rod.

Ohio's car modification laws are awesome. I've been tempted to move there just for that. But maybe it's just because New York's are so bad.

Cool bunch of opel's, I love the black one with the yellow lights. Fix that little pickup and enjoy it for ever. Those little trucks are tough!

Thanks for posting the pics. Its cool to see how other country's people travel.

Try Kentucky, we don't have any laws at all. Even if we did, none of the cops around here would be able to spot a swap.

Hi, do someone know if there is a technical book that show something about the SD22 engine.

It was allready hard for me to find a Haynes for the 720, and the one I received yesterday (had to buy it from USA) doesn't mention the diesel engines.

I know there is something, as I allready found some scans of pages as I was searching about injection pump, but i'm looking for his title...

(Other good new, I just found a new job, I begin to work in Geneva on the first of juni :D)
