Hi all,

Just bought a new Altima after my old 2000 Altima was totalled in an accident.

I love this car, with the leather seats, sunroof, heated seats, etc. I just have a few questions because I'm not sure about a few things. First off, the dealer only had 1 set of keys. I've heard you can buy the keyfob on ebay but I need a spare key...Do I need to get that from the dealer?

Also, the heated seats on high work amazingly. They are downright hot, but on the lower setting I don't feel a thing. I'm wondering if it even works on the low setting or if it's normal that you can barely feel a thing.

Also, I was wondering if anyone knew whether or how I'd be able to tell if the outside mirrors are heated. I'm not sure if they're heated sideview mirrors and if they are I don't think they're working. We had snow here and when I drove the car the snow didn't melt..

Sorry for all these questions, but I don't know who else to ask. Another thing also, about these recalls, since I just bought the car and it's a 2006 how do I know if I need to bring the car in for a recall?

If anyone could help me with these questions I would really appreciate it.Thanks.

Oh, and also there are a few minor scratches on this car. I think the color is called a cobalt grey? Not sure, but if I go to the dealer and get touch up paint will that make the scratches look worse or what is the best way to get rid of the minor scratches? Thanks again..

Wow where to begin?

KeysThe keys do not have a chip in them and can be purchased and cut at a local hardware store.

Heated SeatsWhen the switch is on low for each seat, do they both feel the same? If so, it is likely that is the "LOW" setting. I doubt that part of both switches would go bad.

MirrorsNot heated

RecallsJust call up your local dealer and speak to them about it. They will be able to help you out and give you a quote for the labor.

Did you buy the car from a Nissan dealership in NJ? If so, which?

When I bought my 05 it only had one key and one key fob - I asked for a second set and they made it for me for free. Otherwise, for both the key and the key fob (key fob - you need to go to the dealership for this) will cost you around $70.

There was a recall on the car for the electronic engine module (I believe this was the part recalled - I had it fixed nearly a year ago, so I can't remember exactly). As Darius said, contact the dealership and schedule for the free maintenance.

As for the scratches, the color code can be found here. http://www.paintscratch.com/cgi-bin/makepaint2.cgi. I believe the color is actually Smoke Metallic (K11). The color code is to the left on the chart. You can contact Nissan for a small bottle of touch up paint, but you'll probably get a better deal at an autobody/paint shop. Just provide them with the color code and they can mix it for you. Ensure they add "flex agent" to the paint to prevent chipping/scratching. If the scratches are too deep to be fixed with touch up paint, visit a local auto shop and pick up a scratch buffer kit - you may want to consult a sales person as to which brand is best.

Thank you for all the info. I actually bought it from a local dealer though who doesn't just deal with Nissans...It was a used car lot, I guess, but I do know the car is still under warranty until March 2010 and I also bought an extended warranty, so it's good for 4 years or 75,000 miles.

Thanks also for the info on the scratch buffing kit. There are some that I do think will need a buffer because they aren't that light. I will check into that.Thank you again.

If you're talking about scratches that actually removed the silver paint so you can see the primer beneath it, it's not going to buff out. Buffing is for taking scratches and other imperfections out of the clear coat only.

There's only 1 scratch that you can see the primer..What is good for that?

I have exactly the same car. Love it.OK, as for the seats, the low heat is really low. It's hardly noticable. However, when it's -20C, it's noticable. I always start off with high heat, and then switch to low when I'm hot enough. As for the mirrors, they are heated...standard equipment. They are linked to the rear window defrost system. Turn on the rear defrost, and your mirrors will heat up.They are not controlled independently.Hope that helps.

ahhhh you're right about the heated mirrors. There is no mention of the heating element in the door mirror description at all. The only thing that shows up is a resistor symbol on the wiring diagram for each mirror and you are right that it turns on when the rear defogger does. Good to know!

If the scratch is down to the primer, you'll have to do your best with touchup paint. Definitely get it from a dealership even though it is pricey.

A 2006 Altima DOES have a chipped key. You need to take it to the dealer to get a spare key. They list at about $25 now plus whatever amount the service department charges to program it.
