Car: 95 Q Boat

Post

Just got back from leaving a deposit on a Q boat. If all goes well, I should pick it up sometimes this week. It is a 95 Q in Eggplant color with tan interior. The purpose of this car is to do my 1.4 mile commute daily and drive 125 miles comfortablly on weekends. Let's hope the car will last and I dont have to do much other than oil change and gas (hope it doesnt drink too much).

Thanks for all the tips and pointers, the aftermarket support is partially why I got the Q over the LS (Price and Timing Belt being the only other reasons that were higher).

Thanks

Good. I guess you have the Infiniti delaer performed service history along with the inspection report form a senior Infiniti technician and other documents so you will know where to start with your rehabilitation.

All the information is in the FSM, the TSB and of course, this board.

Welcome to NICO.

Every used Q [90-96] Q for sale needs at least $3,000 in repairs what are yours?

A 1.4 mile daily commute will destroy the car as you must warm up 6-10 minutes to get oil and ATF functional.

"Let's hope the car will last and I dont have to do much other than oil change and gas" ??????

You need something electrical for the short weekday usage!

You bought a finicky 13 year old luxury car that gets 15 mpg to do a 1.4 mile commute...instead of a bicycle? Why?

Really?!? I don't mean to burst your bubble, but that's never been the description of an older Q. Are you good with wrenches?

Unless you've already done everything, or, heaven forbid, found one thats all caught up.. im not sure such a beast exists...

Lots of stuff to consider on older Q.

LOL, nice welcome you got!

Sorry about all the helpful cautionary posts. It sounds like you've been reading the NICO Forums for awhile. You'll find everything you'd ever want to know about the G50 here, and absolutely the best group of Q45 owners on the web.

Ya, your new Q is going to cost you some investment funds in the coming months, if you want to appreciate it as it was designed. But I imagine it didn't cost you a lot in the first place. We like to say it's a $10,000 car, no matter what you paid for it. That's probably closer to $8000 these days.

That doesn't mean it's not reliable and trouble-free. It's very rare that someone comes to the forum with a problem that has stranded them or keeps the car from running. You'll want to check out the fuel pump, the MAF and CAS connectors, the transmission and motor mounts, and the suspension. Those are the most likely trouble spots. Your valve cover gaskets should have been replaced by now or you'll have leaks - check them out. One of these days, a fuel hose under the plenum will start to leak - taking off the plenum to get to it will bust other brittle hoses - you'll need a complete hose replacement. Check out the transmission fluid pronto and take VERY good care of the transmission - you should install an auxillary transmission cooler.

I love that color combo! Welcome to NICO!

Agreed. They are dependable. We're just picky. Sorry to be rude.

about the only thing that will strand people is a major component failure, but most commonly its fuel pumps.

Actually it is the FPCU failing most frequently from the slow turning high amperage of the worn out fuel pump [from buying dirty defective gasoline].

Historically this has been the cause of 70% of non wrecked 90-96 Q being towed in for service. Transmission are next frequent along with alternators.

Geez, way to beat up on the new guy LOL.

All very good points though, especially about warming up versus very short distances.

Try to see how long you will live driving a bicycle on a busy street with no sidewalk in a redneck town. If you don't have a Harley, it's Grand Theft Auto destruction time. I want to live, thank you very much. Plus it's not an ideal position to wear a shirt and tie to work on a motorcycle, of course riding in a 20 years old car isnt exactly cool. But hey, at least my hair will look good.

My old 89 Mercedes 190e did what I wanted the car to do for a full year, didnt have to spend a dime on the car other than new tires and oil changes and gas. The only reason why I got rid of it is because the car is starting to burn oil, but no drivability issue. The whole warm up thing is overrated, you might not get 300-500K miles out of your engine, but it's going to do what I need to do for a year or two with no problem.

$10K for a 1st gen Q? Look in the blue book, try 1K-5K. I picked a 95 because they tend to be more reliable than the earlier ones. I really have no desire to do anything during my ownership after the first month. I will switch over to Amsoil, changed all the fluid and pray. Let's hope it works, still have to drive it home tomorrow. Then its the dreadful emission test.

You can indeed delay a few repair items, but the list will pile up and the cost will keep rising. Stay on top of it and enjoy the ride.

Maybe he's just circling the block a few hundred times on the weekends?

Car is back home. Things all seem to be well, so thats a good start. With AC off and just 70mph highway cruising, I averaged 25.3 mpg. I am dead tired, but there are a couple things I noticed

#1 My car didnt come with a keyless entry remote, can I just get a random Infiniti one and program it for the car?

#2 The steering column rocks slightly if I push it upward to the right side. Any idea what is loose?

#3 Do all cars have the CD changer hooked up?

#4 How accurate is your thermostat on the HVAC system? 70F feels weird in this car.

#5 What kind of wheels are 95 suppose to have? I have seen them with BBS, older style wheels, cookie cutter I30 wheels

Thanks

First off, please complete your profile so we can help.

1.) No, you must match the FCC#. eBay can be a crapshoot, but Joe has them new. You should have two remotes and five keys.

2.) No, but it does not sound good.

3.) Only if it came with it or dealer installed one.

4.) I can hang meat in the TX summer in mine.

5.) Depends on which model you have. Multi-spoked turbine for standard, BBS forged for t and a models.

How do you find the FCC#? 5 Keys and 2 remotes, ha. Try 1 master key and that's it.

#1: FCC ID on the back of the remote for my '95 is A269ZUA073

#3: CD changer magazine is on the passenger side of the trunk if you have one. I believe it was standard on the t and optional on the others.

#4: Mine feels spot on.

#5: As Maxnix said, there were the turbines (also used on the I30) or these BBS wheels http://is.rely.net/3-4-8224-l-...Q.jpg. My neighbor's later (94+ body) base Q has the older pie pans...

No, standard in 1995 and 1996 came with turbines.

You're right. I realized that right after posting. Already fixed.I was thinking 95 had pie pans because my neighbor's 94 (I assume) has them.

the FCC that the minister put up is correct. From there you can program them. the ebay ones are kind of a crap shoot, ive had one that lasted a long time and another one that lasted a week... Still you can buy 2-3 for the price of one new. Pick your poison, but usually you get lucky.

does it feel like the whole column moves? Can you give any other description on what it feels like? Ive never really heard of anything like that.
