hi, I found this site on yahoo and sr20forum. I don't own any nissan cars and I drive an integra ls with a few mods here and there. I want to get another car and I plan to get a 240sx (1990~1994) but the problem is that I have problems finding answers to my questions and I hope you guys can help me out. Yes I already tried search with little sucess... so please bare with me

1) 1990~1994 model of 240sx are identical right? which generation are these 240sx? 2) I had hard time finding infos about 180sx, 200sx also but they are somewhat identical compared to 240sx? 3) does stock 240sx transmission come with lsd? this is very important, I am under the impression that only some 240sx have lsd...? what is the transmission code for the one with lsd?4) what are the common problems with this particular generation 5) they have the flip down head lamp right? what kind of bulb do low beams take? possible to swap in HIDs? 6) insurance rate, which one will be better? 94 integra gsr or 94 240sx? 7) there are the normal, SE, fasttrack trims right? any performance difference between them? 8) what is the chasis code and engine code for stock 1990~1994 240sx? 9) is the stock engine dual or single cam? and what is the redline on this particular engine? 10) car weight would be nice to know also

I understand that some of my question have probably already been covered in the past but I searched 3 different 240sx forum and yahoo with little luck. Thanks in advance guys.

dude, dont BS me, I KNOW you didnt search. these are stiously the most BASIC questions ever on the S13. sigh:1) 1990~1994 model of 240sx are identical right? which generation are these 240sx?

No. From 1991 to 94 the S13 had a twin cam engine. 89 and 90 had a single cam. 94 is also only convertable automatics.

2) I had hard time finding infos about 180sx, 200sx also but they are somewhat identical compared to 240sx?

No. 200sx is a completely different car, 180sx isnt avail. in the US, and it had the SR20 in it.

3) does stock 240sx transmission come with lsd? this is very important, I am under the impression that only some 240sx have lsd...? what is the transmission code for the one with lsd?

Only some 240s came with the LSD. Pretty much the HICAS versions, and I beleive it was an option on SE's (could be wrong about that though). Chances are, unless you find a HICAS, you wont get an OEM LSD.

4) what are the common problems with this particular generation

There are a few. Hatchback spoliers like to rust, etc... I donno man do a search for gods sake

5) they have the flip down head lamp right? what kind of bulb do low beams take? possible to swap in HIDs?

Yes to the pop up light, and I'm sure you could put in HIDs if you really just had to...

6) insurance rate, which one will be better? 94 integra gsr or 94 240sx?

Insurance is all over the place, you need to check with your insurance company for this, obviously... 7) there are the normal, SE, fasttrack trims right? any performance difference between them?

Theres the SE (sport), LE (leather), and the base. The SE and LEs had power options and alloy wheels (abs also I beleive), and the LE had leather. No real peformance difference.

8) what is the chasis code and engine code for stock 1990~1994 240sx?

Chassis: S13Engine: KA24DE (for 91+)

9) is the stock engine dual or single cam? and what is the redline on this particular engine?

Twin Cam

10) car weight would be nice to know also

2500-2700 lbs

Next time search. Seriously.

most of these answers can be found in the 240sx.org FAQ's. But I've got no life so here we go.
Loveless wrote:1) 1990~1994 model of 240sx are identical right? which generation are these 240sx?

1989-1994 sold in the usa are S13. They are not identical Front bumper change in 1991 and 1994 was only LE Convertable. 89-90 have SOHC motor, 90-98 have DOHC

Quote »2) I had hard time finding infos about 180sx, 200sx also but they are somewhat identical compared to 240sx?
not at all identical. Different motors CA18 or SR20 depending on year. Several different trim levels (J Q & K) K being turbocharged. other differences depending on trim include Vlsd and different brakes.

Quote »3) does stock 240sx transmission come with lsd? this is very important, I am under the impression that only some 240sx have lsd...? what is the transmission code for the one with lsd?
You are speaking FWD here. 240sx's are Rear wheel drive, the lsd (or vlsd in this case) is not in the transmission. They are seperate rear differentials. Only 240sx's with SUPER HICAS (4wheel steering) have VLSD.

Quote »4) what are the common problems with this particular generation
Bad smell, worn interior, broken antenna and missing jack/toolkits Quote »5) they have the flip down head lamp right? what kind of bulb do low beams take? possible to swap in HIDs?
Hi/low beam are together in the same crappy headlight housing. I dont know the replacement bulb off the top of my head but i do know the the BOSCH h4 is a popular conversion.

Quote »6) insurance rate, which one will be better? 94 integra gsr or 94 240sx?
pretty specific question that i cant answer. I cant tell you that I, a 20yo male with a mostly clear driving record has insurance on a 93 SE through state farm (expensive) and i have full coverage(more expensive) all for around $140/mo. You can get way better than that but I like my agent.

Quote »7) there are the normal, SE, fasttrack trims right? any performance difference between them?
No difference in respect to motor. The base model will be lighter due to lack of power windows/mirrors. I doubt you would really call that a 'performance' difference though.

Quote »8) what is the chasis code and engine code for stock 1990~1994 240sx?
S13 KA24DE Quote »9) is the stock engine dual or single cam? and what is the redline on this particular engine?
answered above, and 6800 IIRC.

Quote »10) car weight would be nice to know also
this depends on base model vs SE and hatchback vs coupe. aproximate range is 2200 - 2800

thanks guys, and fiz, I did search, try to type in 240sx spec in yahoo and see where it gets you, also register in another forum but they shoo me off saying they are fwd or something and told me to come here. Most forums won't let you search unless you are registered so I pretty much gave up after a while.

So more question about this vlsd, how do I know if it exist or not when I go and look at the car? how do I know if the car I'm buying is HICAS version or not? or like fiz said, some SE version have optional oem lsd but how would I be able to tell? (other than driving it)

I know that I can swap in a vlsd from other nissan models if I can't find a a s13 that already has it. But how hard is the install? I've done valves adjustment, header/catback install, engine mount replacements on my old integra, do you think I can handle vlsd install?

Thanks again

VLSD install is much easier than finding an S13 with factory isntalled.

The hardest part about it is that some S13's have 5 bolt output flanges, and some have 6 bolt output flanges. You might not know that that means, and thats ok. All it means is that once you GET an s13 you need to find out what you've got & order the corresponding parts.

zero SE's have LSD's, all Super HICAS models have LSD's

If the car is a Super HICAS model it will say Super HICAS on the side of the car (unless it was painted). Super HICAS models are rare so dont count on finding one.

Swapping in a LSD from another nissan should be easy for you giving the list of things you have done before.

And welcome to NICO! :)

I'm sorry, I clearly remembered that I use the term spec instead of specs and I'm sure it's a fault of my own. Alright I'll look around and thanks for the great infos and patience provided.

High Capacity Active Controlled Steering - HICAS

Computer controled rear wheel steering varys the rear tires by up to 1*. Designed to add stability & ease of cornering. Low speed the rear wheels are locked, Mid Speed and the rear wheels turn opposite the front, High speed and the rear wheels turn in the same direction as the front.

^ Description of Super Hicas, As far as I know SuperHICAS was the only 4WS offered by nissan on any car in the USA.

"No. 200sx is a completely different car, 180sx isnt avail. in the US, and it had the SR20 in it."

just FYI, the European 200sx is identical to the 240/180. same body style, but europe(like JDM 180's) had the CA18DET.up until 91 when they switched to the SR20

the american 200sx is a completely different thing...
