Hi and thank you for allowing me to post a question.. I have a 78-280Z and I am the original owner..

The radiator fan assembly keeps flying into the radiator .... I removed the rad for a better look expecting to see a loose bolt on this fan but it appears there are none. What hold this assembly onto the shaft?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

regards,

welcome to nico!

there are a couple of things that I can think of off hand that might

1. the fran can be bolted to the front of rear of the fan clutch assy, if it's currently bolted to the front, pull it off and bolt it to the back of the fan clutch, this moves the fan back about half an inch, depending on the thickness of your fan clutch, all 70-83's can be used but they are different lengths with different thicknesses

2, the 280 should have come with "saddles" on between the engine mounts and the mount brackets, that limit the fore and aft movement of the engine, the 240z did not come with these but they can be added to any 70-83, also one or both of your engine mounts might be completely broken, they aren't "captured" like modern motor mounts

Thanks for the reply Evildky,

More specifically. when I said that the fan keeps flying into the rad I did mean that literal. The whole unit; the fan, clutch and pulley case, come off it's position; basically falls into the rad...

Is there not a bolt (s) that hold the pulley assembly onto the the pump ?

lol, sounds like your fan clutch is broken, there are 4 tinly little nuts that hold the fan clutch to the waterpump pulley, I'm guesing they are still holding half of your fan clutch to the pulley while the half with the fan has broken loose
