Just purchased a maroon J30, 97 year model with 50,000 miles. The car handles like the Accord/Integra it replaced in my driveway. Everything works fine, except for the driver-side window that binds on its way up, with scratches on two columns. The other thing is my engine is loud when accelerating from a standing start. I can't even hear the engine from my Camry Solara, but the J30's engine is as loud as my very sluggish Integra (a 4 cyclinder car). The J30's accelaration is fast and responsive, and there no abrupt shifting between the gears. I'm just hoping that this is the way the car is. I really expected a smooth acceleration from a Japanese, near-luxury sedan even if it's still a 97 model.

I'm just following a Mod here on this board advice to introduce myself to the board. I guess my introduction became a "cry for help" post instead. Great board, with very knowledgeable people. Take care.

Loud? Is it an exhaust thing, or just the motor itself? My J is loud now, but when all stock I thought is was just as quiet as any other car. I've never drove a camry before, so that might be really quiet in the cabin....i dunno. The shifting might not seem abrubt in the warm summer season, but the transmission on the J is notorious for a rough 1st-2nd shift when cold. Personally I don't mind it and wish it shifted like that all the time in all the gears, but just so you are aware when that time comes you're not frightened by it.Congrats on your newest purchase. I wish mine only had 50,000 on it,must be like new. Just remember to stay on top of your fluid changes, transmission, oil and brake fluid. and to run that fuel injector cleaner after every oil change on top of running a good gasoline like chevron's supreme.

Thanks, Mayhem, for the advice on the maintenance of the J30. Yes. It's just the engine that's noisy, but I supposed it's not too bad. It kinda sounds like a four-cylinder car when accelerating, but once the engine is warm-up, 5-10 mins into driving, I don't notice it much. Can you tell me more about the "fuel injector clearner?" Is it a self-do job or do I have to get the oil-change mechanic to do it? Any idea how much that would be? Thanks for everything. Take care.

You can just buy fuel injector cleaner at your local chevron. Right before you fill up put a bottle of it in your tank. No sweat. There's some really GOOD stuff called BG44 or something close to that. They use it at T3 in Atlanta. It's a lot more powerful then what you can by at your local store, it actually removes all build up in the injectors rather than preventing buildup which is what most stuff will do. Stick around, I've learned all this just by hanging around NICO. :D Around here a bottle is probably $5-8 depending on the store. Take care of those injectors because they're a bit pricey to replace. You've got a young car so if you start now you'll never have a problem. As for the warm up, remember to let the motor run for about 2 minutes before taking off. The engine speed should drop to aprox 800 then you'll know the start up cycle is pretty much complete.later

Thanks, Mayhem. Man, you've been very helpful. And trust me...I will stick around this forum. The J30 is shaping up to be one of my favorite cars that I've owned. Thanks for the fuel-injector tip. I'll look for that other product today. Take care.

It's interesting how people can preceive something in different ways. When I got my J, I thought the V6 sounded like a V8 when accelerating. Of course, I was coming from a 4 clylinder Honda (great car, BTW) when I moved up to the J30.

Congratulations on your new ride. Could you have the common problem of the heat shields vibrating under acceleration? The heat shields have an annoying tinny buzz that might make you think you've got a noisy 4 banger under the hood. Perhaps after running for 5-10 minutes the warmed exhaust pipes might tighten up the heat shields thereby reducing the buzziness?

That's a good point. The engine does sound more sonorous after 5-10 mins. I have to check that out. In the mean time, I'm trying to address the driver-side window problem, but I can't take the pannel off. Something seems to be holding the pannel to the door in the middle. I have taken 3 screws on the bottom off, unsnapped three plastic screws on each side, took the plastic door-handle house off, and lifted the pannel up to clear the right, plastic holder/stopper. Is there something else I'm missing? Thanks.

Try pulling up on the door panel. It should come off if you pull up on it. I can't explain it any better than "pull up" on it. Don't use any force, it should be easy. Don't break it.

sounds like you may not have removed the power window switch screw yet.

Here is an excellent set of J30 door panel removal instructions. They work perfectly for me, and I can take off a panel on my J in about 2-3 minutes now.

Fixed it thanks to you guys. My 97 J30 driver-side window binds heavily during roll-ups, where it would slow down to 1/3 the original speed or worst. After following the instructions to removed the pannel, I was able to spray the run channels with with the silicone spray. However, this barely helped at all. Then I noticed that the window was slowing, binding heavily when it's about 1/2 way up. So I spray the sides of the window frame, where the rubber insulators are located, and the problem is now solved. I couldn't get the BOSE speaker off after following the intructions to removed the 4 bolts, because it seems like it was supper-glued onto the door frame, so I couldn't spray the motor's teeth. But I guess I didn't need to. Thanks everyone. Take care.
