was wondering, what model i may have, its not a SE because no power options at all, no sunroof, no options all base looks like but at the same time, it has an ugly rubber spoiler. It is a auto with 154K, i was planing on using it for daily driving while my 300zx gets built up. Body and interior is actually pretty ratty condition, but it seems to run ok. There is a noticable chain or someting rattle at idle on this car, i dont know if its a chain tensioner or what, but makes a ugly clacking noise, but runs without problems. Auto seems to shift fine, but however somewhere in the rear end makes a grinding/rubbing noise when i go in reverse cant figure out what thats about.

BTW the S13 is a 1991 hatchback with the DOHC motor and auto transmission, and thanks for anyone with some input.

I can't comment too much on whether your car is a SE or not, but perhaps a look at http://www.socal240sx.org/faq/1991.html could help you out.

The timing chain noise on the DOHC engines is often caused by the upper guide, which is often removed to remedy the problem. Take the valve cover off, and I believe two bolts hold it in, and see if that gets rid of it. Tensioners are also a strange thing on our cars . . . I have a SOHC model, but the original engine in the car had a timing chain wear a hole through the front cover before I got the car (which killed the engine eventually, but that's another story), and after installing a new engine, the new engine's tensioner was not working correctly after a month or so of being in the car. Go figure . . .

I would check your rear brake pads/rotors for that grinding noise, also possibly a frozen parking brake. I had the same problem on mine, it was just worn pads. Hope that helps you out . . .

Hey there thanks for your helpful input, ill check that later on today, again thank you very much for your helpful info!! I consider myself as a avid Z32 owner with skills and knowledge, but know near to nothing about 240SX's or KA24 engines. I am very new to 240sx, the only thing i noticed is that the suspension looks very similar to the Z counterpart.

No problem man. The 240SX and 300ZX are very similar in design, especially when it comes to the rear suspension, with only a few small details preventing quite a few parts being interchangable between the two cars. The 300ZX has a much more advanced front suspension though . . . too bad I don't have one. :-)
