okay, i have found that le is what used to be the se (pre 97 that is) and they had the option of the vlsd with abs (with the le that is standard?) and the le also had the 5 bolt lug standard. does this all sound correct so far? the only thing is, i don't like abs (probably cause my little economy car, a cavalier, has a crappy version) and it doesn't seem like i can get vlsd without abs? so would i be better off getting a base and putting my own lsd in? and also 5 lug and probably some other things that i am missing. or is the le vlsd that much better than just a lsd (that v stands for viscious right?, sounds like it's good, but also could just be a marketing tool. now this info isn't saying anything about 97/98 differences (still can't find any), is the motor and transmission maybe a little different?also i heard something of a ka24det with a 6 speed and that it is only in the 98, but i am not sure if that is only japans version or not? please correct if possiblethx

Welcome to the boards man....sorry, there was neevr (as far as i know) a turbo KA sold fgrom the facotry, and we never had a 6 speed in our S car here period. I'm not certain if you could have the lsd without abs on the s14, but typically you see them together....swapping in an lsd isn't overly difficult....if you can find one for a decent price, jump all over it, but typically 97~98's (S14A's...the A is for after, as in after the the minor changes, like the shark eye headlamps and whatnot) are massively overpriced....and yes the LSD that came on these cars is a viscous unit, and not a bad one at all...its silent and works wlel for daily driving, but if you wnated to more then just part time autoX then a KAAZ unit will be needed

sounds as if my best bet is a 91-93 (leaving out the 94=vert and auto not for me) (and pre 91 cause they had the weaker motor, what like 10-15 horses less and only a single cam, sounds like it's just less modifyable) and work that up to a race car (with the 91-93 that is), whether it be autocross or drift, hopefully more, i would love to be paid for racing (dreams aren't meant to be easy right)thx

Well dont leave out the earlier S14 (95-96). Theyre referred to as the zenki and the 97-98 are called kouki.

The only difference between the zenki and kouki models are the headlights, taillights, and a few minor details. Nissan built many more zenkis than koukis. Thats primarily why the later models sell for a premium.

Also, if you decide on the S13 (89-94), dont run away from a 89-90. Yes the stock motor has 15 less hp, but it still has lots of potential when turbo'd. And if youre gonna swap in a motor, it doesnt matter anyway.

you have a ton of motor options no matter which year u pick

theres the KADE KAE SR20DET CA18DET RB25DET RB26DETT RB20DET LS1 2JZGTTE QR45 or whatever that Q45 v8 is, the VG30 motors, or even a roto.

most common are KA and SR, then u got the RB and CA guys and then the rest are sorts exotic swaps...

its a matter of how fast u wanna go- and how much moola ur gonna spend

price determines power. and cheapest bang for buck is KA-T

I've got a '98 LE 5spd, 82k, mint condition, extra set of SE rims (incl. the set that's on the car now).

$10k and it's all yours.

quite tempting, but a little pricey for me. i have also thought about it and realized that i like to do the mods myself. i'm not a guy that likes to have the best, just an improvement of what i had before is good for me.i am thinking of gettin a 91 to 93 and doing up the drivetrain and suspension. does that motor have enough power to drift? ultimately i would like to do some real track racing, but the ultimate control of drifting is just so awesome! so i will start out drifting and work my way up. this kat i hear of, is this a whole new motor with the turbo or is it the motor that comes in the 240's turboed? and if so where can i find this kit, or any 240 performance site that actually sells good product? you all know what i am talking about, ya know what sites can actually be trusted to deliver a good product?thanks in advance!

All S14's come with KA24DE's, DOHC 2.4L 4cylMy auto dynoed at 119.4RWHP and 135.5ft/lbs of torque bone stock.KA-T is short for KA24DE-T (T=Turbo)So, yes, KA-T is the stock engine, except turbocharged. Refer to NICO's own Import Auto Performance for turbo kits, and they give EXTREME discounts to NICO members, $100's.http://import-autoperformance.comAnyways, good luck in your 240sx selection, and don't rule out the Kouki's (97-98) or the Zenkis (95-96) yet! There are cheap ones out there!!

Welcome to NICO.

The different engine names confused me at first, so if you haven't picked up on it yet they all go like this...

KA = Engine Code24 = 2.4LD = DOHC (No D means it's SOHC)E = Electronic Fuel InjectionT = Turbo (TT = Twin Turbo)

I think the turbo 6 speed you were talking about only available after '98 could be the S15 Silvia? They came turbo, and I believe you can get them with a 6 speed.

Yeah, post '98 S15 VVT SR20DET's were the only '240' engines that came with 6spd. But, it's not worth it- from what I've been told, they don't handle power as well, and are not as reliable as the regular 5spds, sure the extra gear is nice, but not imperative.Stick with your KA-T plans

aw theres nothing wrong with the 89 - 90 motor. Just cause its a SOHC doesn't mean its a weak little thing. It can have just a much potential. So if you find one at a good price or something, then don't hesitate to look at it. my .02

i do know a little about these cars, but what i was asking is do i get the ka-t shipped from japan as you would an sr or is the more practical thing to just turbo the ka motor that comes with the car? ya souns a little stupid getting the same motor that you already have shipped from japan, but if you can get the sr clip for 2500 and a turbo kit for the ka somewhere in america for 3500 why can't you get the ka-t from japan for about the same price?, but i think what you guys mean by ka-t is staying with the motor in the car and gettin a turbo kit, correct?

Real quick, KA-T's can't be imported from Japan, you just buy kits for them. Also, you may be able to get a redtop SR20DET for $2500 or so, but contrary to popular belief, it is not a COMPLETE swap, you'll be a good $4000 deep before it's perfectly running. On the other hand, IAP, the people I talked about before give NICO members their stage 1 kit for $2600 I believe, and it comes with EVERYTHING. Not only that, but you'll be putting out more HP than a stock SR20 too. I'll help you out some more tomorrow, off to bed for me too

Also, plenty of people drift in their stock KA's. I'd get front/rear strut bars, and front/rear sway bars, and of course shocks/springs or coilovers before you seriously do anything. The best I can do is doughnuts in my auto No worries though, my license plate will read AUTOKAT soon enough

is the kade as strong as the sr when turboed? the impression that i get is the sr20 motor is just bulletproof, i really don't know much about the kade.also an lsd would be a good idea along with the bars (drift wise) correct?just curious, but why stick with the auto (because it came with the car or is it because an auto can be built to handle more than a manual,(from what i have gathered in the past searching for info for my cav)), i have an auto as well

KA24DE block = ironSR20DET block = aluminumYou tell me which one is stronger A turbo KA will put out more power than a lightly modded SR.

I am keeping auto because I really don't have a problem, like most other people, with not shifting. D = go P = stop. Nice and simple. Also, the car will really kick when you floor it and the transmission downshifts. The auto transmission is not able to hold as much or more power than the 5spd though

All the pro drifters say learn in a stock car, because it will make it easier for you when you move on to a more heavily modded car.

The KA has a strong stock bottom end, people have went over 400hp with a stock bottom KA.

If you are drifting an LSD is a must. Without one, you will only get one wheel spinning. This probably isn't the best definition (and may not be 100% correct) but I'm pretty sure VLSD's (Nissan's OEM LSD's) work like this...

There is a plate attached to each shaft going to the rear wheels. In between these two plates, there is silicone. When one wheel spins faster than the other this creates friction which heats the silicone causing it to expand and locking both wheels together.

Some drag guys just weld the open differential so it is locked together at all times, but when cornering the inside wheel needs to turn at a different rate than the outside wheel. By welding it they will spin the same, and the inside wheel will hop. May work for a car going in straight lines, but not very ideal for a daily driver.

You can get a VLSD from HICAS model S13, and Im not sure but I believe any other 240sx with ABS. You can also use the diff from a non turbo Z32, or a '92-'96 Infiniti J30. If you don't want a VLSD, you can get them from Kaaz but you will be paying a considerable amount more.

You can find these in salvage yards and on eBay. BEWARE if you look on eBay though, many people have thought they were buying a VLSD and when it gets to them it is an open diff.
