Hi all, I have a few questions for the manual transmission owners out there.

A general discussion forum for G35 and G37 owners and a great place to introduce yourself to the NICOclub G-Series Forums!

I have only had my G35mt for a couple of weeks now and it's still in the break-in period. I usually shift around 3500 to 4000 rpms for now but through the shifter it seems the engine is racing at 4k rpms. Also, at around 3k rpms I get a rough vibration in the shifter that gets worse if I let the engine drop down just under 3k and then give it some gas. It does not feel like the vibration you would get if you were in too high a gear and the engine was about to stall. It’s more of a high rev vibration but after I pass around 3200 rpms it diminishes somewhat to a much smoother vibration that you would expect to feel through the shifter. I only feel this through the shifter and not on the steering wheel or anywhere else in the vehicle. Has anybody else experienced this?

Also, what do you normally shift at if you are just accelerating normally and if you are accelerating as fast as you can? If I shift at around 4k I will be at about 65mph by the time I am in 5th gear. This to me seems to be a good max rpm to shift at unless I am trying to take off fast. So far I have not let it get much past 4500 but I wonder how high I could go with it without damaging anything. As I said it seems to me that engine is racing pretty high at 4000 rpms.

BTW: My rev limiter is currently set to 4700.

my car seems to have alot of vibration through the shifter also i was kinda worried about it so i call the dealer and they told me that it was normal so i stopped worrying about it

i shift at 3000 rpm for normal driving no point getting much higher than that

and for maximum i will shift at redline but have only done that a few time

thats not where infiniti set it...

according to infiniti, your engine reaches its power peak at 6200rpm (depending on what version you have, 280hp or 298hp, this # is for the 280hp). the 298hp version peaks at 6400rpm. usually, nissan engines redline somewhat beyond their peak (example, my vq40de peaks at 5600rpm but redlines at 6200rpm).

you are WAAAAYYY short shifting it for all out driving.

for daily driving, i don't see why you'd need to go over 3k, having been in the 298hp car at that rpm (and full rpm by the way) i think you are certainly doing a bit more than just moving with traffic, even at 3k shifts.

The dealer actually set it to 4700 before they gave it to me. It was set higher but I don’t remember what it was set at when I took it for a test drive.

I didn’t say I was keeping pace with regular traffic but merely shifting at what I felt was reasonable rpm to not be racing. I like to take off fast and get to the speed limit (or 10mph over) as quickly as possible. I don’t do that all the time just when I feel like having a little fun. If I am in a mellow mode I usually shift around 3500. When I am feeling like having a bit more fun I usually shift around 4000 to no more than 4500. I haven’t really raced the engine yet since I still only have 650 miles on it. When I get to around 1500 miles I’ll change the rev limiter.

That setting is good until the engine is broken in. After that, set it to 8k. As far as the vibration, mine does it as well. I was also concerned about the vibration in 3rd when you keep it in gear, and let off the gas. Seems normal for the G.

I've been driving MT for over 30 yearsI shift my 2006 G35 6sp MT at 3000 RPM. I see no need to go higher unless I really need to pass another #*%&** driver.

firstly....try to be as gingerly as possible when breaking in the engine....i kept (or tried to keep) mine under 4k untill i reached about 2500miles... as for the vibration there is a resonance in the transmission right around 3grand, I notice this the most in the condition that you described where you are at a higher RPM and then slip back down to 3grand.

Hold the odometer button down until you see flashing numbers that correspond to the RPM of the limiter. Push the button again to scroll through the RPM range, until you reach the desired limit. This will only flash the REV light, not cut fuel.
