well, i was sitting around contemplating on whether to finish my CA18DET 240sx or just dump the $2500 i am sitting on into my 240z, when an idea hit me.....

well, this idea came to light quite a while ago, but I thought Id share it with you all.....

My motor will be a frankenstein of epic proportions!!! Its going to start off like any other good old L series stroker, with a deisel crankshaft, but its also going to use the deisel block as well. some VG30E .5mm over pistons for a 83mm stroke and a 87.5mm bore then I can run some nice 152mm rods out of a Z22 ( I think) engine for a LONG rod engine with a rod to stroke ratio of 1.83:1 in my 3.0L motor

Now, here comes the tricky part...... the head

I have had some response to this, but not as much as i had hoped. I want to chop/hack/weld 2 KA24E heads into one 6 cylinder, 18 valve head for this monster. I was thinking on chopping one head in half, then lop the end cylinders off of another head and weld the middle cylinders inbetween the halfs of the first head. thats basically how the original L series 6 cylinder engine came about. from a hacked L series 4 cylinder. appearently, the KA24E head will bolt on to the a L20 block or ANY Z series block. It just might be crazy enough to work!! anyone have any opinions on this? someone said they knew of people that were trying to do this, but I guess it never got any further than that? anyway, later all

cheers,McAdam

edit: I'll need wither custom rods or custom pistons or I'll have the pistons at 1.75mm below deck height. or I can use Z22e .5mm over pistons and have a negative 1.3mm deck height... hrmmmm low compression = twin turbo???? ...........

Am I the only one that likes the old school Z's on this forum?? damn shame...... my 240sx is just merely a toy, the Z is a true enthusiasts car...

I love old school Z's, i just dont know anything about them. Im sure lots of people here would help you if they could. But your talking about a very very very unique, probably-never-done-before project that no-one has experience with. You should try it and tell us the results, or talk to some real datsun/nissan profesionals

The old L-Series heads flow like champs, especially the ones with big exhaust valves. Very few machine shops are able to significantly increase the flow through one. You have to go to the big guys like Robolo to find significant improvement.

I’ve thought about working up later heads to fit, but why bother when the original is so good?

There was the o-so-rare LY crossflow head and the o-so-freakin-expensive OS DOHC four valve head, just use those:pface Why don't you put the L in the 240? It looks good.

the 2 KA24E heads was a thought because I have 2 KA heads sitting on blocks with holes punched in them. and the KA24E head gaskets matched up to one of my old L6 gaskets, save for the difference in cylinders. an L6 into a 240sx?? interesting proposition.... stump pulling torque and a truely bulletproof bottom end. what mounts? is it tricky? how much custom??

I have a 90 hatch that will be another project, havent decided on a motor yet tho. the CA18DET is going in a 89 notch stripper model, its got a really nice set of headlights!!! lol j/k. it has no power options and no AC. and I beleive the notch is lighter than the hatch?

I also have a line on a VG30DET with transmission and a ton of spares such as ignitor chips, coils, covers yad yada yada for $850. all it needs is the harness and computer.... speakin of MAD, hows the wiring motorset for the CA coming? could you get one for a VG30DET??

peace,McAdam

DET(single turbo) or DETT(twin turbo)? The L heads are damned good as is, I doubt you will see much power increase by building a custom head. Full tilt Ls routinely lay down 100hp per liter NA with 12 valves and 1 cam.

I am leaning towards det single turbo form a CIMA. then build a forward facing turbo manifolds for the turbo, buick GNX style and mount up a nasty T04E. Electric fans instead fo the mechanical and I should have plenty of room. maybe some 550 injectors and a nice intercooler. keep things relatively simple. I measured shock tower to shock tower on a Z32 and again on my S13. S13 was actually WIDER by about 3 inches. those double A arms take up quite a bit of space under the hood.

As far as the L thing goes, yeah I know the L heads flow well but, full built, full tilt KA24E motors can get into the lower 300's on the pony side, thats better than 100hp/L. not to mention the whole cross-flow aspect of it. its a project, seince experiment, fantasy, what ever yuou want to call it. frankensteining is fun, you of all people should know that!!
