so i have been working out for about a month and half now, i workout about 4 times a week, i do a 30 minute full body workout, then work on machines that just focus on certain muscle groups then ill end the night with 15 minutes of interval training on the treadmill or play basketball for at least an hour.

Now, i have noticed that my arms are bigger, chest is flatter, legs are bulkier, i have a lot more strength, my cardio is great but i have one nagging problem...i still have a belly and love handles! now i have heard there is no direct way to get rid of this type of fat that hangs around those areas besides burning the maximum amount of calories you can, but what i wanted to know is if there are any supplements that you guys would recommend like protein shakes or other supplements that will aid in the process of burning the fat in my midsection, i have tried VENevol and the only thing is makes me do is feel jittery, so, any suggestions?

I'm not really trying to get big, i just want to be lean and cut, any suggestions would be helpful.

There is no such thing as "spot burning"

I wish there was a way to just burn fat thats on my belly but thats not going to happen....basically you have to do some intense running (and sprinting) to get rid of that. And drink lots of water and eat healthy to help speed up your metabolism.

Edit: but yeah im kind of in the same situation as you...except for me i workout 7 days a week, usually for about an hour. Since i started doing that, i did in fact lose some (not a whole lot though) fat.

QFT.

With that said, the mechanics are simple, but not easy to do.Your diet should be high protein, low carb, low fat... DO NOT cut out carbs or fats. Your body needs them and they are important.Doing 1000 sit ups will build up muscle in your mid, but you will still have a layer of fat covering it.. making it not worth the intense effort. What the intense situps will do though, is burn calories. Your best bet would be running , or using a cross training machine to burn maximum calories. You need to get your body in a state where you use the carbs you consumed in the day, then force your body to look elsewhere for energy ---> fat. So this will require you to watch what you eat, and how much. Training wise...train (cardio) at least 3 times a week for a good calorie burn. Working your core will HELP, but it won't target the fat in your midsection.

Good luck!

Ah, spot burning.

Waste of time. Machines are for gyms to make money. Isolation exercises are for more experienced lifters.

A low body fat percentile is made in the kitchen. I recommend you check out John Berardi's 7 habits. I basically structure my diet around it when I'm cutting weight for competition.

1000 sit ups a night would be overtraining times 10. Your abs would never have time to heal 100% from the previous session.

For good cardio that's great for calorie burning I suggest high intensity interval training(HIIT). Basically warm up a bit, and then sprint for as long as you can then jog for a 30-60second rest period and repeat until you can't do it anymore. If you last for more than 5-10 minutes you're not going hard enough. If you're not in good enough shape to do a sprint/jog, do something like a run/fast-walk.

Losing weight isn't that hard if you can dedicate yourself. Most of the time when I start cutting I can drop 2lbs of body fat a week, which is pretty much the maximum I can lose a week without losing muscle mass.

If you ever need any fitness/dieting questions answered I'd be happy to answer, I'm sort of a health/fitness freak.

Machines meaning like a bench press machine... its pointless.

Machines (what I was meaning) like cardio.. (Total Body / Cross trainer, treadmill, etc..) are what you want to utilize. Cardio is better after weight training anyhow... so maybe weight train for 30 mins... then cardio for 25?

It's all what works for you man. I've been lifting, researching, reading, and taking supplements for over 4 years. Not to say I'm a pro, but I do know what I'm talking about.

You'll want to eventually get prudent with freeweights... as when you get into muscle-isolated workouts, you will get a lot stronger.

Some machines you can't avoid using, such as machines to work your legs (you can do squats with a straight bar, but I would recommend those till after you've trained for a while, it's easy to get injured doing that)

yes, i use only five machines in my gym, 3 to work my legs, 1 to work my abs, and 1 to work my shoulders and biceps. oh and the "machine" that assists you with doing squats.

yes sir, i usually do press/flys on a flat bench and also lift and kickbacks on a flat bench, to be more descriptive you lift a heavy dumbbell for so many reps lifting from the ground to your chest then immediately pick up a lighter weight and kickback your arm and then bring it back to your bicep for so many reps.

The motion of lifting from the ground to my chest tears my shoulder to shreds. I can't do certain exercises... that one is a great one that I can't do unfortunately.

I've dislocated my right shoulder 3 times, and my left one once.. lol. Kinda screwed :-\

heres my share or tips

dont eat after 7.eat healthy, no microwave frozen food stuff, fast food, or junk food.. oh yeah and pop if you drink it

drink alot of water, buy the 2 gallon containers at jewel and keep one in the kitchen, or by where you chill the most.

running will help, if you have a pull up bar you can hang from it, and pull your knees up (abs and pain xD)

eat fruits, once your body gets used to it you will reject junk food even if you want it.

drink orange juice, milk, eggs, oatmeal(i eat the flavor ones only), a bannana, ham.

If you really want to lose your gut you can easily do it within 2-3 months.

just dont not eat, when your hungry, eat and when your looking for a snack, bannana oatmeal!! woot!

also buy some whey protien for emergencys when you have nothing to eat, or not enough.

Oh man, just the thread I'm wanting to make tonight.

My workout plan:About 4 times a week for 1 1/2 to 2 hours. 20 mins cardio, with a 5 min cool down.

My cardio is usually in the beginning of the workout.

My focus is to lose 30lbs(I currently weigh 210 and boucing back and forth between 200 and 215). I want to weigh 180, and be able to show a little muscle without having to flex. I don't want huge muscles, I just want to be sorta cut.

I'm eating a little healthier, but not too much. I have a complicated living situation and I can't really use the fridge, so eveything I eat, has to be eaten that day. No grocery shopping really.

Pointers?

*edit*I'm 5'7 by the way. I know, "fat a$$"

You sure about that? don't eat anything after 7 pm?

And yes if you drink soda....stop now, I stopped drinking that crap back in mid december and i have to say, it was probably one of the best decisions i made...i can't even tell you how much better i feel.

Yup, you also might want to consider eating yogurt in the morning too...just my opinion.
s13gebala wrote:If you really want to lose your gut you can easily do it within 2-3 months.
Just as long you are doing intense cardio and eating right, you should be able to accomplish that.

My advice to the OP would be to try different workouts, and different styles.

I was kinda the same way for a long time, where you would do the gym thing, the running thing, the eliptical thing, etc...

They're all great and wonderful, but you need to throw your body for a loop.

Do alternative forms of exercise that work your body in different ways. I'm at the gym almost every day doing that type of stuff, but no top of all of that, I play hockey 2-3 times a week (better cardio than running any day...), I rock climb (this is the best workout ever, and super fun...), yard work, etc...

If you get into a "rhythm," your body is just going to go along doing the same thing all the time, and you're going to plateau and not notice any new stuff.

I also recommend a lot of "body weight" exercises - training that involves using the weight of your body as it's own resistance (ie, pull ups, push ups, etc). These not only help you stregthen and tone, they also allow you to be come more agile and quick with your body.
