That piece is the housing for the thermostat and is part of the lower front timing cover. You do not remove the head. The old manual said to, but there has been a revised procedure in which you are just extremely careful with the exposed end of the head gasket that gets sandwiched between upper and lower timing cover. the lower is what youre after. You may not have to remove the valve cover, but that would make it a tad easier. I will say be careful of stripping all of these valve and timing cover bolts because it IS aluminum up there. Carefully remove distributer, accessory belts, crankshaft damper. The crank is a 27mm. Remove covers, swap covers.
