WHOA! I'll have to call Danny to see what's up? Did you order the chains too...or just the guides?

BTW...who is doing your guide job and where and when...i must have missed the thread on this good news when I was out of town. I'm very happy for you though.

I got a hold of Scottsdale finally. Joe said their phones have been up and down today.

Justin processed the order for the chain guides, tensioners, bolts, oil pump chain, AC belt, idler pulley.

Grand total: $431.27.Overnight shipping included! I am one very happy Scottsdale customer.

Grubbs Infiniti wanted over $700 just for the chain guides and tensioners.

Bob Jackson (ScottJackson on NICO) is doing my guides. He ROCKS.

I'm off to Iowa on Saturday!!!

Jesda - is that the complete list of parts I need for the chain guide replacement. Just want to know because I'm saving some greens to have the job done as part of my next investment into my '91 Q. Now if only Jeff (BadQ45t) responds to my posts or emails with a recommended mechanic/technician in the San Fran Bay Area that charges reasonably.

Jeff travels alot and does not always have access to his email. Might try a search of his posts for a mention of his local shop with the ex-Infiniti techs). He doesn't chat much, so there won't be a lot of flotsam to sort through.

For just the guides, tensioners, bolts, and just the oil pump chain, its under $350. With new chains, its just under $460.

[Disclaimer: Thats rounding off what I was quoted. Prices are subject to change yada yada yada.]

The town in Iowa I'm heading to is Promise City, located right along the middle of the IA/MO border, 280 miles from St Louis.

I asked Bob to take a couple photos as things progress, which I'll post next week.

You know, why did I sit and think it would be $1500 or so to get the parts for mine? Which, I'm still at a loss as to whether they were changed or not, since Infiniti has no record of it I would seem to think they weren't, but the way I drive, I'd seem to think they were :)

I'm creeping up to 186k on original guides, which I'm told is rare, but another NICO member recently replaced his guides at 201k.

If they haven't been done your front cover will have blue silicone gasket, if they have been done it will be red silicone gasket. -Joe

Or black or blue even green and yellow .....probably not white or clear. Although I've seen some really funky RTV used

Different people use different colors [sometimes you run out and have to scrounge]........the key is probably sloppy vs neat rtv, as working under stress inside the engine bay vs factory on a stand.

Sure changing cam drive chains only adds ~~$100 in parts but the extra 11-14 hours of book labor........makes them a $1,000 item.........but you do get your valve covers reseal [a normal $500 item].......you could change plugs simultaneously for only the cost of plugs.

Wish changing the guides was a normal 100k service item just like a timing belt on most cars.......it would be easier to swallow for owners.............LS400 belts cost $1,100 to change as idlers and water pump have to be changed at same time.

Comparable costs based on driving 200,000+ miles.

Can anyone point me to a thread where I can find out how to check the front cover, as I'm still fairly new to the Q's engine bay, I am still reading up on where everything is.

Q45Tech - As clarification, are you saying that the cam drive chains should be replaced at the same time when the drive chain guides are replaced in order to avoid repeat labor cost because the scope of work overlaps? So this basically means only an additional $100 in damages, plus cost of new plugs, right?

JoshIsSciFi - Your experience coincides with mine, and basically address Wes' concern, which is that this NICO site has tons of worthwhile info however it's organized in piece-meal threads that makes it inefficient to search for the topic you really want. I've been searching on and off for two days based on one specific username (BadQ45t to be exact) for a recommended shop in Northern California and have had little success. As a fairly new member of NICO, I'm already loyal to the site and will continue to come back to it. However, just browsing thru Wes and Jesda's site for 10 minutes was the one of the best things I've done because the detailed documentation available there is simply priceless.

Life expectancy on the chains is 250k. If you want to keep your Q longer than that, do the chains...if not....

Valve covers? Spark plugs?

The person doing my guides is only removing the front cover.

1)No. No need to replace chains at that time. Chains last essentially life of car, no cases known to us as a group were chains failed unless due to broken/failed guides1b) No, lots of addtional labor costs will be incurred, in addtion to parts costs.2) You should have seen our old yahoo groups format , from where we all came to here.Individual posts interupted by ads.
