Wrong sir.
If you tow a boat behind a truck, with your O/D on, and you do it many many times, you WILL be replacing the transmission.
O/D is an extra gear, that is considerably small, and makes almost no power (on most vehicles) used to cruise at highway speeds. If you have the O/D off, yes, you will be able to pass a lot easier, because you won't be using a smaller, less powerful gear.
say you have a 4 speed auto + O/D, you theoretically have 5 gears. O/D is basically your 5th.
So say you want to pass someone on the freeway, just punch it, the transmission will automatically shift down from O/D to "4th" at this point, you can turn off your O/D to keep it in 4th gear, and you'll be using a more powerful gear.
One thing to be wary of. If you are in O/D mode, do NOT just press the button to get out of O/D, it is bad for your transmission.
Anyway, welcome to NICO
