Hey all,

I just registered here. I'm looking to buy a used I35 (2002), but I thought I'd ask some questions first. I clicked on some of the pinned threads at the top, but found mostly how-to's, not information on what to look for when buying these cars so that's what I'm here to ask.

It's an 02 I35 with ~45k miles on its 2nd owner. The current owner doesn't have very many of the records though, which sucks, but I am planning on having the car checked out by a mechanic and also running a Carfax. Speaking of which, does anyone have a carfax account that could run a VIN for me?

Also, does anyone know of any trusty mechanics in the Sacramento area that I could take the car to?

Also, assuming the car's in good condition, and everything's stock, what would you think is a good price to pay for this?

Thanks in advance

Welcome to NICO.

Carfax is a good starting point but you have to do your own inspection. To get a better idea about pricing, refer to Yahoos! Autos, Edmunds and KBB.

Check the body/paint for signs of collision repair. Check the condition of the leather (expensive to repair/replace) and make sure all accessories/features are working (AC, stereo, powered seat/windows/sunroof, central locking, remote control, etc.). You must get 2 sets of keys and fobs. Check engine compartment and fluid condition for signs of neglect/abuse. In CA, passing the Smog check is a requirement before a car can be sold. But just to make sure, check CEL comes on when Ignition is turned ON and goes off once engine is running.

Test drive the car on city streets and listen for unusual noise - rattle/clunking/grinding sound (problem with bearing/suspension/CV joint/engine mount/exhaust/etc). Take it to the highway and check basic alignment and listen for excessive wind noise. Drive at various speeds, ensure smooth shifting and watch out for vibration (wheel balancing or engine/transmission problem) Listen for rattle when accelerating and do high-speed braking (>45 MPH) SAFELY and check for vibration or brake fade.

Ask for vehicle maintenance history It would be better if you could have all the fluid replaced as part of the deal.

Loystock pretty much covered everything. To check the paint, look for visible seams or discolorations and run your hand along the edges of panels. Often if a panel has been refinished there will be a finish line you can feel. For mechanical condition I would recommend having your local Infiniti or Nissan dealer look at it. They can do the usual inspection and run a Consult-II scan on the car.

These guys have it pretty much covered. Just to clarify, check the condion and odour of the engine oil and transmission fluid. Inspect the body in bright sunlight-every flaw will be apparent from different angles.
