Depends on your cash flow really. For starters find a car with minimal rust!

Your stock engine and transmission will suffice unless you really want to get into it.

Uhh.... check craigslist in your area, find a decent body, and then clean it up.

Common motor choices are: SR, RB, CA, sometimes KA-T.

It all depends on what type of motorsport you want to get into, autocross, road racing, drifting.... so on.

you have to find one that you lke and stick with it and build the car for that purpose.

are any of those types of engines just better for drifting or is it just up to personal preference?

most people will try to tell you that one engine is better, but its an ongoing debate. the differences are all in horsepower, torque, displacement, etc... but they will all be turbocharged. unless you go with the ka-t, i would check for a place with JDM engines in your area to help decide which one is available also. good luck!

For drifting its all a matter of what works with your budget, although you want to get a LSD since the stock 240's don't have them, at the local track near me you see people with stock single cam KA24e engines (from the 89-90 S13) drifting, so any engine can work... Most people run sr20's because they come with a drivetrain and a VSLD, but front clips (engine/transmission/radiator/etc) are running at least $3k, plus another $1500 if you pay someone to install it.

Motorsets are running around $2k, but you will need a radiator and a front mount intercooler + piping. Lot of complications with buying the Skyline engines, as you need custom motormounts, lots of little parts, and the availability of parts is also pretty scarce compared to the Sr20det.

This thread is a good buying guide before you start shopping. If you are buying it from a younger guy, if they can't spell, sound like a douchebag, or start spouting random crap about their car and avoid serious questions about reliability then move on, a lot of people in their late teen's and 20's buy these cars and thrash them. I got mine from some dude in his 50's, but he didn't do crap for maintenance, and I've got a blown headgasket with 105k miles.

BasicsKA24e (140hp)KA24de (155hp)Ka24de with turbo (roughly 220hp) but requires lots of parts, including an engine management system like Apexi SAFCsr20det (205hp stock, easy to get 250hp by increasing boost, 300hp with motor upgrades, bigger turbo, and better fuel system)rb25det (250hp)
