Hey hows it going. I am a newbie here. As my name staes I drive a 1990 VW golf with a 1999 audi 1.8T swap. I did all the work myself and just finished a junkyard T3 turbo kit. I didnt think it was much faster than the stock turbo but it turns out it was enough to walk My friends supercharged e36 M3 with 291 rear wheel horse. :D Needless to say I love the car and still want to keep it.

My ? is I love 510s and am looking for one in the north east but am having no luck. I would like to also do the SR20DET swap but since i am new could someone explain the difference between the red top and the black top.. Thanks in advance for any info. Also any leads on places that datsuns are usually for sale? One more ? why havent I seen a skyline swap in a 510 yet.

Not that you care but here are a few pics of the GTi

I am new to SR20's but I may be able to help. As far as I know, the red tops are from the earlier cars like the S13's. They are about 205 hp. The black tops are from the S14, S15's. They are anywhere from 230-250hp. The price difference is huge though. A used jdm S13 goes fro about $1100. A used S15 in the same condition is about $3700. I'm sure someone will correct me if I am wrong, because I may very well be. That is all I've got. Someone please add or correct if needed.

Also, as far as the skyline swap: I think parts would be to overwhelmingly expensive or hard to find in the states. Also the whole AWD thing makes it a little difficult to do. It would be crazy awesome though.

Hey thanks for the response guys I thought that I would never get any. LOL. I have actually seen some front skyline clips come up for sale. . See I believe it would be possible because they made 2WD [RWD] Twin turbo skylines. Let me know where to find a good 510 and this is a swap I might attempt. Thanks again for the response.I think that it would be pretty strait forward.:D ;) :icesangel

Here are a couple of pics of the engine swap...

this was just after the Junkyard turbo kit. That is the explanation of the curvy hose just above the engine cover. That will be replaced by a full steel hose in the very near future that is much more apropriate. Not an excuse just the truth.

the problem with the skyline swap is this. the 510 is a very small car that came with a small 4 cylinder. the skyline motor is a big straight six. you can do anything with money and a welder, but the motor would be into the interior of the car, and the shifter would be in the back seat. there is a guy with a supra 6 in his 510 wagon, but there is a lot of custom fab involved. if 510driver.com ever comes back online you can check out my car(72 with ca18det), lots of sr20 cars, the supra wagon, and many others. lots of helpful peeps on the forums too.

the sr20 and ca18 on the other hand are virtuall bolt in with all the kits and parts available now. hope that helps.

the rb bolted right up to the stock 510 trans. but you need alot of upgrades to do that

why are you talking out of your ***, and trying to spread false information?

if you could bolt the stock 510 tranny to the rb26dett, which you cant, the motor would be sticking out of teh front of the car, or the trans would be in the back seat as i stated elsewhere. if your gonna bull****, at least educate yourself a little.

do you even know that the 510 has a 4 speed, not a 5 speed?do you know what rb26dett stands for?have you ever even seen one in person?(the car or the motor)

Damn!Am I seeing an Aviator grey 20vT A2? Very nice! Maybe it's Nimbus? The light is a little funny.. Whatever color it is, really nice job.

If you really want skyline power, I'd use an S30 240Z. You could do it to a 510, but it'd be so much easier in the Z.. Like ca18 said, the motor would go into the engine compartment pretty far.. you might even have to rig-up a new ash tray.. at least relocate/delete the heater core. The SR20DET can be modified to put out plenty of power for a 2,000 LB car, and it plugs into the engine bay no problem. Same with a custom KA24DET. Even a NA KA swap is a lot of fun, and you could do it really cheap.

Anyways, welcome to the Datsun camp from an ex-dubber.

Do you have any slips from the VW. It looks cleanly done.

the S13 SR20 motors came in two valve cover colors, red and black. THe reds are the earlier ones and the black the later ones. They are the same motor. The S14 and S15 SR20's had back valve covers and are different motors. YOu can tell an S14/15 because it has a different intake manifold and the hump on the front of the valve cover for the variable valve timing.

By the way, the RB26DETT DOES NOT bolt to a 510 trans, and you wouldnt want to use a stock 510 trans anyway, it was designed for 96 Hp.

Why would you want to put a RB26dett in a 510? There are other easier swaps that yield lots of power and be easier and look like they belong there. For that matter, why would you want to put a SR20 in a 510? But that's a subject for another very worn out thread.By the way Compression, Looks like a nice clean install.
