I've put some time in on the truck lately. I replaced the oil pump, the oil pan gasket, the battery cables with 2 ga, the fusible links with inline fuses and got the driver's seat bolted in place. So I took it for a ride. It seems to have developed a tin can death rattle and hesitates when I accelerate from a stop. I'm wondering if it might be the cat.

I can hear a bit of a constant rattle when the hood is up, but I can't locate it. It seems to be coming from the driver's side of the engine, but I'm not sure. I tightened down the air filter, so I'm sure it isn't that. When I took it out around the block, I heard a tinny, hollow rattle, almost like I was dragging something. I checked all around the truck and under it, nothing looked out of place. It wasn't constant. It almost sounds like some one dragging a muffler.

Sounds like the heat shield around the exhaust manifold or the heat shield around the catalytic converter.

On my truck, if I open the driver side door and slowly run the revs up in neutral there is a place where the heat shield on the cat will resonate and rattle like crazy, a little less or a little more gas and it's fairly quiet though.

I'll crawl under it once it quits raining and have a look.

I was going to suggest the heat shields too... I'd also check for any exhaust leaks, particularly at the head pipe collector. These things are notorious fro cracking...

Could it be the engine is pinging (timing to far advanced). Is the noise internal to the engine, or external?

I don't think it's the timing. It sounds more like the exhaust to me.
I'll take a look at it tomorrow hopefully.
