I'm having trouble trying to swap out my stock shift knob on my 2000 max.

Is it an auto or manual?

I don't remember if the 2000 autos were gated or not, but if they were it works the same as the manual: it unscrews. Easiest way to get it off is to use a pair of channel locks. If you plan on keeping the old knob, wrap it in a towel so it doesn't get ripped up.

The 2000-01 auto shifter was the same as on the '00-'01 I30, which is to say not gated.

Its stick. I figured that it twist off, but when I couldn't get it to move I wanted to play it safe and ask first.
