So I am finally starting some work on my TT

I just picked up my engine hoist and engine stand today and I've been working on tearing my car down for the past couple weeks. At first I was just doing the small things. But the more I took off, the more I noticed other stuff that had problems from the previous owner.

So now the goal is a complete overhaul. Im taking it down to absolute nothingness, then starting over. So engine, body, interior, and suspension will all have my fingerprint on it. (Yes I know this is both time consuming and pointless. But I dont gaf about your negativity anyways.)

So I am going to need a lot of insight from some of the more experienced. (ie: I've never done a engine pull before)

So wish me luck guys and hopefully illl be able to show off my creation in a few years.

Oh, you crazy crazy guy....kidding of course, glad to hear Blue will be making the comeback! :dblthumb:
I myself am staring fully at the need for ME to do much the same as you- start work for a couple of needs (replace IACV/harness, all engine sensors, turbos, rear seal, clutch), and in the end have re-done nearly everything and gone without my Z for an incredible amount of time...
Keep us posted, I've got lots of Moral Support if nothing else! :chuckle:

Well the moral support is greatly appreciated DCaff.

As for other forms of support. .. Anyone have a in detail engine pull write up? I've seen a few but I was wondering if anyone can point me to the one they used

That's about as pic heavy as you will find. It's not as scary as it looks. Post up if you get stuck

Well since mother nature didn't let up today... all I got done was just under my car. So exhaust, driveshaft, starter and transmission are out. I guess that does make the rest pretty easy

That's a great start!
My assessment of the job is that a step by step process should work best, and if I was at your current stage I'd be pretty happy.

Got the engine out today!

Im not one to brag... so instead ill downgrade the difficulty of it.

This engine is extremely easy to pull. I was able to get the engine out by myself, with no mechanic as a "phone a friend" lifeline, and on a sideways downgrade. (Which made avoiding the steering rack very difficult)

Over all it took me only 4 hours total. And that included taking off the clutch and fly wheel so I could put it on an engine stand once it was in the air.

Sadly no pictures of the pull because I didn't want to waste the time of lifting it a little, then stepping back, the lifting a little, the stepping back, etc...

So if anyone is like me and spent the last 2 years starring at a dead car... Don't! This s*** isn't that hard.

Now time for the tear down and rebuild!

Next time I pull mine, I'll have to try pulling the transmission first, usually I just pull them together :inoutgay:

Wow, 4 hours???
Extremely encouraging for my choice to (eventually...grrrrr) do my turbo replacement myself!
My can-do attitude has almost always pushed me enough to do some tough things myself, but after the work I have done with the TT and knowing all of the things it has on it, I just assumed it would be a relative nightmare like pulling and inserting a BB Ford into a '67 GTA Mustang when I was a kid.
Carry on!!! :gapteeth:

Great job! 4 hours is a good time. While it's out, do your deletes and bypasses too!

Very well then. Just so you know then... The only main delete that I had not already done was the egr delete. But that s*** got cut out ss soon as the engine was out. Like seriously. I took an angle grinder to it like 50 times to show how much I hate that thing. Haha

So I already knew the engine was in somewhat bad shape just because it's been sitting for so long. But I didn't realize it was going to look like this.

So btw how do you get the heads off? Is that an 11mm hex? If so where do you find that. Everywhere I look I only find 12mm and 10mm

Alright so I got the ps head off expecting somewhat of a rusty massacre. Gladly enough it was just small little bits here and there that I think I can get off myself. What do you guys think?

Lookin good! IIRC there should be a vin tag or something like that on the transmission and/or engine block. Engine doesn't look too awful after sitting for a while
