well...if i get the scirocco sold soon i should have about $1500 to play with. now, i'm not sure whether i'm going to get a motorcycle or not with that, but if i don't i'll want to put it into my car, because my engine and transmission are about to kick the bucket. (my kae's got timing chain rattle, low compression, burns a quart every 500 miles, rod noise, etc etc...it sucks!)

so, i believe i would do the CA because of it's lower price and availability of maintanance parts over here.

flashoptions.com has ca18det front clips for $1000 (although i'm not sure how good flashoptions is as a retailer). if i got that, what else would i need? just a downpipe, right? is that the only thing that gets cut? i'm going to try to get this in as stock as possible at first because the increase in horsepower - while that will be very nice - is not the only reason i'm doing this swap.

also, since these are older motors, is there any recommended freshenings i should do? should i just do new gaskets or should i also do rod bearings or oil pump or????

sorry for the newbish post, but i couldn't find definite answers to lots of this stuff with search - and i figure if i ask and we get a good thread going it may help more than just me :) of course you could flame me and tell me to use the search too, but that'd be no fun.

1,500 isn't really enough to do a successful motor swap... it will probliby cost about that mutch to get it to your house.

Just the basics llike clutch, fuel filter, oil change, transmission oil change exc will put you over budget...

I've got 2800 in mine and that is without an intercooler... so add another 700 and its at 3500 bucks with an intercooler and a downpipe. All the little crap adds up fast like a clutch, gaskets, wires, connectors, oil, transmission fluid, coolant, tool rentals..... You will NOT do it for less than 2k and you will NOT do it in 3 days either :)

well, lets say i was going to use the stock smic for now, which i would get in the clip. if i got the clip to my door for the 1500, i'd need a clutch, a downpipe, and....?

i'm not worried about it not being quick, but i've done engine swaps before so i dont think it should be that bad. (only on vw's though)

I did it with less than $2000 bucks, $1600 to be exact ;) And I did it in exactly 3 days too.

1500 for the motor, and 100 in parts. Stock side mount, stock clutch, stock everything else. Cut and rewelded SR downpipe.

I wanted to be sure the motor ran good before I started replacing parts.

All depends on how you're going to do it. I've got 2500 or so put into my swap so far, but that's including having some welding done to the frame (strut towers), buying a bunch of new bolts because the old ones are rusty as hell, a new fuel pump and some fittings and stuff and refinishing a few things like the gas tank. (Ospho and Hammerite are your friend :))

hehe, i was just using flash options as an example (i mentioned that i had no idea on their reputation, and of course i would check stuff like that out after i've made the commitment to doing the swap). the other clips i've seen have been 1000-1400.

good price for a clip is 1200-2000 bucks, depending on the shape. good price for a motorset is 1000-1500 (if its complete).if you see prices below that, be wary, they often don't include everything or are pieces of ****. on the other hand, there are occasionaly good prices to be had, so if everything checks out, cheap could be good.

Jon....

Thursday sounds good to me. I have to take the wife to the airport at 7 am, so anytime after about 8 should be good.

Wanna shoot for the normal 12 o'clock then?

I think I am going to get the NPR intercooler and we can make up some pipes for it and make the kit for that.

one other thing i should ask you guys about are what are some things that i should absolutely make sure the motorset comes with. i think i'm going to go with soko because i'll be able to see the engines in person and pick them up == no shipping costs. $800 gets me motor, transmission, ECU, intake/exhaust manifold, "some of the sensors", and the turbo. i'm emailing them to see if things like alternator, p/s pump, water pump are also included, but if they're not? can i use my SOHC KA parts, or will i need to get pulsar parts?

if i'm thinking of this right - if that does come with all the accessories, i'd just need an intercooler, try to get a harness/sensor package from someone, downpipe, and a bracket for the ka ac compressor to bolt to, minimally, right? i'll also do a new clutch and motormounts.

Pulsar or 85 200SX Turbo. KA water pump wont work, the P/s pump will or use the CA pump and attach the KA lines. KA alternator wont work. I used a 88 Pulsar one.

You have a 90 right? My car is a 90 also and the KA AC compressor bolts right on. Theres no need to empty the system if its working. The only problem I encountered was that the compressor pulley sticks out about 3/4" - 1" further than the CA bracket. The KA ac bracket wont fit, it wont bolt up, even if it did the power steering pump is in the way.

I havent put a belt on the compressor yet. Im hoping it wont be a problem when I do put it. But im sure it will throw the belt right off because of the misaligment.

Yeah Cincy airport.... should be back home at about 8 or 830. Just gimme a call and let me know what time. I guess the only thing that we need to do is swap rims, check my CAS and fix your code 34.... shouldn't be more than an hour or two of work.

Slw, you used up all of your luck at the casino's. I never make any damn money there, but I always seem to luck out when I'm working on my car.
