Well, we have been living in a relatively remote area for the past year. For the last couple of months I have been smelling raw gas through my ventilation system. I took the car in to a mechanic who has discovered some chewed hoses and a nest on top of the engine below the intake plenum.

Does anyone have any ideas how to keep this from happening in the future? I can understand that the car provides a warm place to rest for the little creature, whatever it is, but I am the one who pays the bills!

Any country folk out there who know how to deal with this???

ThanksKen K

i live about 100 miles from any population.. animals seem to nest in around under over all over my car. get some pickle juice, put it in a spray bottle, and spray it under the car, and just a light drizzle by some hoses, it don't take much, most of the animals won't come near it, it's probably a rat nesting in their, they don't like the smell, rats like the warm place in the motor.

The fuel leak under the plenum is a very common problem with the Q's. I almost wonder if the rat nesting there had anything to do with it.

The Pickle juice is a good one

Now, is that juice from sweet pickles (in which case I would worry about ants) or is that from dill pickles? If the latter, I would worry about a constant desire to eat a corned beef sandwich...... ;-)

Luckily, it wasn't still under there. Being an auto tech I've run into this before. The worst was having to remove a partially decapitated rat from a drive belt (well...broken drive belt). Blood and fur everywhere. Definitely had the latex gloves on that day.

Small animals LOVE electrical wiring and vacuum hoses. Just not so go if they are still there when you start the car.

Sadly, this isn't unique. Q45Tech once speculated that the knock sensor subharness was made of recycled Big Mac clamshell styrofoam

Your best bet is a well sealed garage filled with D-Con.
