My QX is headed for the trash heap...

In about 9 months or so. Unless I find myself in a house with a garage and a sudden bump in pay to give it reprieve as a hobby car, it's toast.

Rear bushings are shot, AC needs replaced, wiper pump busted, exhaust leak at manifold, valve cover gaskets leaking, people keep transferring paint to my rear bumper and not leaving a card, too many little fixes need to be done. Gas mileage sucks balls, Not enough cargo space, etc., etc.

So anyone want to buy used QX4? Only $5K. Motor's solid. New front axles. Tires still have 40K+ miles left on them. Timing belt done 25K miles ago. New water pump put in 2 months ago.

unfortunately the 97-2000 qx4s have horrible resale value the 01-04s aren't much better.

how many miles does it have?

I'm sure you can post it up for sale locally and get some hits, they still are nice rides

Used cars in general have bad resale value, especially now that new cars have incentives like crazy. Basically, a car will lose half it's value every three years. With that being said, I have found QX4s have slightly bettered that trend.

That just kills my day. After a day of work, walk out to the Pathy and find a huge chip out my bumper, or a streak of red paint on it, or something. Though most of the time it's on my front bumper.

Do people not learn how to parallel park these days, or at least to take responsibility? I admit that I occasionally nudge people too, but it's barely crawling speed and a rubber hitch cover means 99% of the time I do no damage. A couple times I left a little rubber streak, left my card and they never called me.

How compatible is it with 01 QX4's? If it's black I may want the rear bumper.

Sorry - I'm Silver/Black combo.

Billy - kids man, kids. Can you believe it doesn't have enough cargo space? That and my wife is short and getting the kiddo in with the carseat is not easy for her.

Like I said, a reprieve may be granted, but I wouldn't count on it. At this point, it's likely that I won't be able to trade the POS in or even sell it cheap. No one wants a detiorating luxury SUV that gets horrendous gas mileage. It just might be a hobby vehicle, but I seriously need a garage first!

for the prices that these are worth now, its almost not worth selling! You can always hang on to it for ski trips! I think that the value you get for the price is phenomenal.

horrble gas mileage.... true. "deteriorating" not true! Try taking any 2010 SUV off-road against a Q and see which one breaks first!!

true dat.

But yeah, it's deteriorating. All the little s***'s breaking on it. I have to keep a bottle of windex in my car to spray on my windshield since the pump died for the washer fluid.

At this point, I could EASILY drop $4K in it just to bring it back to stock performance.

I feel ya. Its stupid to spend $$ on such an inexpensive car now. But the way i look at it, a new SUv or truck is still gonna cost a lot more than that and cannot do the things that the R50 is capable of, nor would you want to abuse a new car.

I still love my very slow Q !

I just spent $1700 on rims and tires only to have the transmission fail which cost another $1500. So thats over $3000 in stuff done to a car thats worth $4000. Silly but i love it!!

Only 147K miles. Engine's not the issue. It's all the little crap. Such as:

AC compressor deadAntenna doesn't retract anymorewiper fluid pump deadLights on climate controls outRear bushings shotFront bushings probably tooTransmission leaks when going up hills in 90F heatValve cover gaskets shotAlternator is giving up the ghost (got a year max)Windshield's horribly pittedBrakes need replacing

And the list goes on...

Most of these seem to be wear and tear items, that eventually need replacing. It is approaching 10-11 years old and even the best cars still need upkeep.

The thing you have to ask yourself is what on the Q is the most important item to fix or break them down by budget.

AC compressor dead - what do rebuilt ones go for?;San Fran needs A/C; use coupon from local garage to save $$$$ Antenna doesn't retract anymore - no biggie; not crucial to vehicle op; replace unit from parts yardwiper fluid pump dead - not crucial to vehicle op; replace unit from parts yardLights on climate controls out - it happens; replaceRear bushings shot - find independant shop and cheapest bushings you feel comfortable with; possible do F/R at same timeFront bushings probably too - see aboveTransmission leaks when going up hills in 90F heat - where does it leak? front, back, pan?, replace pan gasket; add new fluid as neededValve cover gaskets shot - buy gaskets; do it yourselfAlternator is giving up the ghost (got a year max) - wait 'till it goes and save $$$ until thenWindshield's horribly pitted - mine too; replace w/ insurance?; forget it and move on?Brakes need replacing - source pads and rotors and DIY over weekend

Dayton must have super cheap shop rates. Imagine if I lived in downtown Chicago (closest real city I can think of near OH). That's how it is.

Shop rates are $70+/hr. I have no garage, no driveway. All items are simple fixes, couple of weekends would take care of it, if I had time & space.

Anyway, the point is aside from that, but those items just seal the coffin.

Thanks for the support everyone, but it's likely that I'll have to let the rig go.
