I am looking at the 350Z, Mostly the Grand Touring or Track models 05 and 06 Years and the 2007 with the VQ35HR.... Is it worth an extra few G for the HR variant motor... and also is the upgraded brakes worth the extra cost in trim levels.... I would think the Brembos alone would be worth it...TELL ME 350Z secrets,,, what sucks about the car, what is GLORIOUS... I now drive a R/t HEMI MAGNUM that has walked on a few 350Z on closed courses but I might have Z fever.... Tell me what RWHP I can have with an 06 track model DE VS HR

WHAT ARE THE FIRST MODS TO DO POWER WISE??? say 1000 dollars maybe 2k

THANKS Ryan

What sucks:
2 seater
constant loud sports car-esque road moise
Don't expect a decent bump in power without the help of forced induction
small trunk space

Whats GLORIOUS:
2 seater
The mpg, i avg 19 just going around town. (also not driving like an a$$)
One of the smoothest engines known to man
Nissan reliability
Great handling without any suspension mods

If you can get your hands on a 2007 or 2008 model with the HR motor, go for it. I think we have reached a point in time now where we can overlook a decision between de or HR (but thats just me.) The HR was revised with about 80% of changes compared to its DE predecessor. Thanks to its much more beefier internals it is also boost friendly.

What $2k could get you: intake, tune, lsd, gears

But, but...it's been modified! I mean, look at the stereo and the amps. And did you see the tint!

Move along buyer, nothing to see here.

vlsd is nice if you plan to drift.

I'm not sure if the HR equipped Z's are the same as the DE's, but I'd avoid the base model so you could at least get cruise control. A side benefit of having cruise control is that UpRev's Osiris tuning software lets you switch tuning maps with the cruise controls. ;) VDC (Vehicle Dynamics Control) is nice if you have to drive in crappy weather (think of a smarter version of TCS - Traction Control System) and like the safety net of the car making some corrections if things get too hairy. I rarely have mine kick on in normal driving, and there's always the option of shutting it off, but not completely - it's always there in the background - just harder to get it to "take control" when it's turned off.

You'll eventually want to replace the diff unit anyway, so if you're going to go with a base the saving may actually end up helping finance what could be your first modification. I'd actually look around for a track or grand touring trim so you could get the Brembo brakes. Unless the price of the car is astronomical it's worth getting a Brembo equipped model as most decent aftermarket brake setups for the Z are pricey. Upgraded pads and rotors for the Brembo calipers are plentiful, while good/great pads & rotors for the standard calipers can take some searching.

It's not bad to get a base, (for what its worth EYE have a base) its just if you plan on taking the car to some autocrossing event (etc), the vlsd makes the car worthwhile. Or you could opt to just buy a base model and purchase an LSD unit separately. The only problem with the factory vlsd's is that some of them start to go over time / mileage and end up behaving just like an open differential (which comes in ONLY base 350s)

I am looking heavy at the HR, I test drove a 370Z with revmatch and oh my was it nice but not @ 34,000. but it was 2011 with 3k miles..... I am viewing two Z33's on Saturday,,,One is a 2005 35th Aniversary edition 6spd. ReV Up 300hp. the other is a base 2007 350z 6spd...if they where close in price what would you choose? i want the 07 but the brembos are attractive as well as the interior upgrades.

I have a 35th Anniversary. Loaded with features and nice but I would check out the engine thoroughly. If they have maintenance records look over those as well, pay special attention to oil change intervals and what was used.

The RevUps have a history of burning oil (an issue with the finish on the cylinder wall, or so I was told from a Nisaan Master Tech who shall remain nameless). Not all RevUps had the issue (mine does not, though I was always vigilant) but many of them did/do. Nissan's answer was to replace the engine, so you may have an engine with fewer miles that the car...but this did not always solve the answer. Just for my own peace of mind I'm planning on an enlarged oil pan or an oil pan spacer to give me an extra quart capacity.

If you get a good RevUp, it's a great engine, bump in HP at the cost of some TQ, but it's got a great a great power curve with beefy internals. You get all the fun features from the track model (except the lightweight wheels) plus the cool stuff from the touring model - even though I have to update the DVD navigation disc every other year or so I wouldn't have it any other way (connectivity in the sticks with small window/dashmount units sucks). The Bose headunit is nice but can have problems with some homemade CDs, like most I always have a digital device plugged into the stereo though. I mention the Bose with the Nav because they're tied together, the Nav will override the audio with on the headunit to give audio navigation cues...and I don't know if you can have one without the other.

I suppose if I were picking between the two I'd consider how much it would cost to add a good set of upgraded brakes and LSD to the '07 against how much it would it take to get the bump in power you can get from an HR engine in the RevUp from the '05 (plus the knowledge that you don't have to worry about your engine).

What's the difference in price between the two? How many miles on the '07? How many miles are on the 35th Anny?
