Help with Windows media viewer

Hey guys, can you help me out here. I'm having problems with my media viewer in that when I try to open a file, I either get an error message that I can't read, or if it does play the file, I have no picture. My compy is Japanese and I can't read any of it. Know of anyway I can fix this...or maybe even if just downloading a new version will help...
