ok guys, I'm not the smartest guy in the world and when I took my head off I forgot to support my timing chain with the block of wood and it fell down into the block. I can still see it and I was wondering if there was any way I could get the timing chain back up without taking the timing chain cover off? because that would save me a lot of time and headache. thanks guys

agh, u gotta take it off now! hate to be u. just to be sure that the chain/guides/tensioner are all in place.

might as well check the timing cover for the dreaded signs of chain-rubbing against the cover & making a hole.

a proffesional timing job on a single books for 9+hours. i myself can do it in 4-5 with a rack! its not really a sucky type of job to do. it just takes patience my friend. and YES you dropped it and lost it. now you have to gut it up! your looking close to a grand roughly off the top of my head. but im shure you can wheel and deal! or i can send you all info needed from my computer to yours on how to do it successfully. its up to you!

There's a writeup on 240sx.org, as well as the actual Nissan TSB on a Geocities server, easily turned up with a Google search.

I will say that it is not as hard of a job as it seems. Pull everything off, replace chain (or put back on in your case), put everything back on. If you can remove the head, you can do the job IMO.

Yes I know, I was saying that if you're mechanically inclined enough to remove the head, the timing chain job is no sweat.

yeah that is alot of work. i removed a brand new chain kit from a messed up sohc after i pulled it (obviously didnt save the engine). i remember thinking how much youd have to take apart if it was in the car. might consider replacing it while your in there if its old and the cover is worn. seen kits for $45 +shipping. youll need a puller for the crankshaft pulley and oil pump drive gear though. if you do it make sure you cover the crankshaft bolt threadhole. i could send you the kit $20 +shipping if it help$

assuming you have the fsm but if you dont:http://www.nissaninfiniticlub....10514

yeah guys I got it. The timing chain fell down the front cover, and I got it out with a coat hanger...and its still attached to the sprocket!!

On the same tooth? How can you be sure?

What he said. Unless you're absolutely certain about the timing, don't risk it. Get that cover off and do it right.

If you have a week, why not pull it off to make sure the timing is correct? When it fell, who knows if it slid off the sprocket or not?
