Post

Hi, i recently bought a 1969 datsun, I´m starting to restore it, but checking the posts related to engine identification I noticed that my engine id does not match with the common identification for this year, it does'nt start with A, J, L or any other common character for datsun engine.

is there some help with this issue?

my engine id has a "M6W" mark and also has a lined M on engine's block, driver side =M=

Thanks for your support

Post up a pic of the engine - I'm glad to help ID it.

Also, your engine ID is on the P side, near the front of the engine, just below the head.

FWIW, I have a '68 510 I've restomodded, so I'm eager to see what you got!

Thanks AZhitman, there are some pics of the engine, the car has a lot of details, but I'll do my best to bring it to good shape, I'll share some pics later

OK. So, let's start with this: That's not the stock engine.

Your '69 510 should have had a L16 (1600cc). The stamped steel valve cover looks a lot like the early E and A-series engines, but it doesn;t match those either.

Looks like an early H-series (forklift) engine, based on the placement of the t-stat.

Now, what's stumping me is the Datsun valve cover (which wouldn't have been on a forklift motor) and the lack of a breather tube.

Dammit. OK, I'll be working on this for a while. Hold please. :)

LJ, a quick consult with a good friend and I've got an answer for ya.

Here's his reply: "Its a Mexican J motor. It will be either 1600 or 1800 depending on where it originally came from. Mine has the same "M" casting on the block. It is the logo used by Nissan indicating cast in Mexico. The 1800 or J18 I have is cast M8Y where the normal engine code stamping would go. Not sure why the deviation from standard, but this also had a Borg Warner "top loader" 4 speed and a Dana 30 with 4.56 gears factory installed when assembled in Mexico."

Hi folks,

Found this topic looking for answers on the engine my car has, it's also a Mexican J engine, I'm not sure if its a 1800 or 1600, no idea, I checked the SN and it starts with M8U, does that make it a 1800?

Ah by the way those engines were sold as "Universal Engine" in Mexico. Mine has stamped the logo Made in Mexico ( Hecho en Mexico) on a side.

Attaching some pics.

Cheers!
