Car: 1992 Nissan 240SX, 130,000 miles

Problem: A few weeks ago my clutch pedal started sticking. By sticking I mean that I would depress it and release and the pedal would keep that place for about a second and then "pop" back out (actually hard enough to make a loud noise). It got to the point where I had to pull the pedal back up with my toe everytime I switched gears. I also had a very difficult time getting it into gear.

I have had the problem before and it was the fault of a bad slave cylinder. I took it to a mechanic and they agreed that it was the slave cylinder again and fixed it.

Next day, the clutch pedal works well, and I can change gears smoothly. Except, the clutch now slips in and out of gear while driving. I just had the clutch replaced about 9,000 miles ago, so it I know it wasn't burnt out and must be related to the pedal problem.

Take it back into the shop and they adjust the clutch pedal. I get it back and now I have the sticky clutch pedal problem and I can't get it into gear.

What is the deal here? Thanks.

So I have been searching around the other clutch related topics and many people have said you should replace the slave AND master cylinder. Could that be the problem?

That would be my best guess. You can try and bleed the clutch but it sounds like it is the slave and master cylinder.

IT'S PROBABLY EITHER A BAD MASTER CYLINDER OR YOU MAY NEED TO ADJUST THE FREEPLAY IN YOUR CLUTCH PEDAL. LOOK UNDERNEATH THE DASH AT THE CLUTCH AND YOU SHOULD SEE THE SHAFT COMING OUT OF THE MASTER CYLINDER. MAKE SMALL ADJUSTMENTS BECAUSE YOU CAN MAKE YOUR CLUTCH SLIP EVEN MORE WITH TOO MUCH ADJUSTMENT IN THE WRONG DIRECTION. HOPEFULLY THIS HELPS. GOOD LUCK.

Update: The shop now says it needs a new pressure plate, a $500 job. Yeah right! So needless to say I have taken it to a new shop to get their opinion...

This same problem happened to my clutch last week. I replaced both master and slave cylinders, still there. So I took apart my clutch, and it was the pressure plate. It was completely sprung. That's probably your problem. $500, is not that outrageous for a shop to do it as you will have to replace your whole clutch, not just the pressure plate. Hope that helps.

Update: Yes, it was finally concluded that the pressure plate was the problrm, and I just had the whole clutch replaced, $350. It was determined that when I had the clutch installed 10k miles ago they failed to adjust the clutch pedal. So, when it was not being pressed, the clutch was still engaging a little. Basically it was like driving around with my foot pressing halfway down on the pedal for every mile of the 10k. Then when I actually pressed the clutch pedal, I was putting way too much force on the pressure plate, in effect crushing it, so that's why it only lasted 10k. A bum deal (and a weird deal according to the shop), but I kept the old clutch and I'm gonna confront the shop who screwed up, hopefully I can at least get what I spent on the part back.
