It was completely sprung. That's probably your problem. $500, is not that outrageous for a shop to do it as you will have to replace your whole clutch, not just the pressure plate. Hope that helps.
Update: Yes, it was finally concluded that the pressure plate was the problrm, and I just had the whole clutch replaced, $350. It was determined that when I had the clutch installed 10k miles ago they failed to adjust the clutch pedal. So, when it was not being pressed, the clutch was still engaging a little. Basically it was like driving around with my foot pressing halfway down on the pedal for every mile of the 10k. Then when I actually pressed the clutch pedal, I was putting way too much force on the pressure plate, in effect crushing it, so that's why it only lasted 10k. A bum deal (and a weird deal according to the shop), but I kept the old clutch and I'm gonna confront the shop who screwed up, hopefully I can at least get what I spent on the part back.
