I've got a 92 240 coupe that is typically stored in winter. This year is the first year that i've had a location where i was actually able to put the car up on stands.

However, now that the car has been up for a few months, both tie rod ends (i'm pretty sure thats what they are - the rubber boots at either end of the steering rack) are leaking. I've never had problems with them to this point - but they both are still original too. Is it just coincidence that both of them seem to have gone at once, and do the tie rods themselves need to be replaced or just the seals?

Thanks,

Sb

If you can find the rack seals you can replace them. but the typical repair is replacing the power steering rack to fix it. The boots are only dust boots and dont seal the rack. the seal is inside behind the inner tie rod.

Is there any chance the leak is because the car is up off the ground and the suspension is hanging down? Replacing the rack sounds like an extrodinarily expensive repair.

Thx.
